Mannings Expands “Safe Disposal of Unused Medicines Programme” to 75 Collection Points in Partnership with Community Organisations
HONG KONG SAR – Mannings has announced the launch of its “Safe Disposal of Unused Medicines Programme” for the fourth consecutive year, significantly expanding its collection network. From June 26 to July 23, 2026, citizens can dispose of leftover or expired medications at 75 collection points across Hong Kong, including 62 Mannings stores with pharmacies and 13 designated community organization locations. This initiative aims to promote safe medication disposal and enhance public health.
Expanded Collection Network
The 2026 programme sees Mannings collaborating with six community organizations, including the Christian Family Service Centre, Hong Kong Christian Service, St. James’ Settlement, The Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation, Hong Kong Family Community Pharmacy, and HKUMed Community Pharmacy. These organizations will establish “Unused Medicines Collection Boxes” at their service centers, facilitating the proper disposal of medications. Notably, Hong Kong Christian Service will also provide pharmaceutical knowledge to the elderly through its home care outreach services, promoting safe medication use.
Safe Disposal Process
All collected medications will be transferred to a licensed chemical waste collector authorized by the Environmental Protection Department. The medications will then be properly destroyed at a chemical waste treatment center. This programme encourages community participation in safely disposing of unused medicines, thereby enhancing medication knowledge and safeguarding both environmental and public health. Disposal services will only be available during the hours when Mannings pharmacists or healthcare professionals at community organizations are on duty.
Complimentary Medication Counselling Service
In addition to the collection initiative, Mannings is offering a complimentary medication counselling service aimed at reducing pharmaceutical waste at its source. The programme encourages citizens to regularly check their home medicine cabinets, helping to prevent excessive storage and minimize environmental pollution while ensuring safe medication use. Registered pharmacists will be available to assist citizens with any medication-related inquiries, providing guidance on proper usage and potential interactions. This service is free of charge and does not require an appointment.
Significant Impact Since Launch
Since the programme’s inception in 2023, Mannings has successfully collected and disposed of over 15 million tablets. As the first major community pharmacy chain in Hong Kong to implement unused medicine disposal services, Mannings has taken significant steps to reduce environmental impact while educating the public on proper medication practices. This initiative reflects Mannings’ commitment to social responsibility and public health.
Philip Chiu, Chief Pharmacist of Mannings, noted that many households accumulate significant amounts of unused medications, including those that require completion of the entire course, such as antibiotics. He emphasized the importance of following doctors’ instructions to avoid delays in recovery and increased healthcare costs. This year, Mannings aims to promote the concept of “home pharmacy checks,” encouraging citizens to regularly review their medicine cabinets to prevent the accumulation of expired or misused medicines.
Chiu further highlighted the essential role of community pharmacists in educating and counseling citizens to establish correct medication habits. He stated that through this programme, Mannings hopes to convey that medication management and environmental protection are equally important and can progress together to enhance community health and sustainable development.
