WeRide and Uber Launch Robotaxi Service in Dubai

Introduction to the Initiative

In a groundbreaking development for transportation in Dubai, WeRide, a prominent player in autonomous driving technology, has teamed up with Uber and Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to launch a Robotaxi service. This service is now officially available on the Uber app, marking a significant step toward integrating autonomous vehicles into everyday city life.

Service Availability

Starting today, residents and visitors can easily access WeRide’s Robotaxis through the Uber app. The service is operational in popular areas such as Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah, which are well-known tourist destinations located near public beaches. With just a few taps on their smartphones, riders can select the ‘Autonomous’ option on the Uber app to book a ride in one of these high-tech vehicles.

Fleet Management and Safety Measures

Tawasul has been chosen as the primary fleet operator for the WeRide vehicles on the Uber platform, ensuring that the management of these autonomous vehicles runs smoothly. While the service is now up and running, a vehicle specialist will be onboard during rides initially to enhance safety and reliability. This step is part of a broader effort to pave the way for a fully driverless service, which is expected to roll out by early 2026.

Dubai’s Rapid Growth and Transportation Needs

As one of the fastest-growing metropolitan regions globally, Dubai boasts a population exceeding 4 million residents. The demand for innovative transportation solutions is reflected in the increasing number of public transport and shared mobility trips, which reached 153 million in 2024. Notably, the usage of shared mobility services surged by 28% compared to the previous year. Through this trial, WeRide and Uber are taking significant strides to meet the city’s ambitious goal of achieving 25% autonomous journeys by the year 2030.

Vision for the Future

Jennifer Li, Chief Financial Officer at WeRide, emphasized the importance of their autonomous driving technology, which has been validated in various global markets. “We’re expanding rapidly across the Middle East, driven by our vision to deploy tens of thousands of Robotaxis by 2030,” she stated. This partnership with the RTA and Uber signifies a mutual commitment to enhancing autonomous mobility.

Similarly, Sarfraz Maredia, Global Head of Autonomous at Uber, expressed enthusiasm about the advancements in the UAE. He noted that this launch is an essential part of Uber’s strategy to support Dubai’s vision for the future of mobility, furthering the company’s mission to evolve transportation options in the region.

A Leader in Autonomous Mobility

The introduction of Robotaxis in Dubai illustrates the UAE’s intent to establish itself as a frontrunner in autonomous mobility. WeRide and Uber’s collaboration signifies a broader dedication to innovation, as Dubai joins an expanding network of cities worldwide piloting autonomous vehicle operations. With nearly 150 autonomous vehicles currently operational in the Middle East, over 100 of these are Robotaxis, indicating the scale of this ambitious project.
