Kasey Kahne is set to make a significant return to full-time racing in 2027, joining Spire Motorsports in the NASCAR FedEx Freight Truck Series. The announcement, made by the team on Wednesday, marks a notable comeback for the 46-year-old driver, who previously retired from full-time competition in 2018 due to health issues.
Kahne, an 18-time winner in the NASCAR Cup Series, was recognized as one of NASCAR’s “75 Greatest Drivers” in 2023. His illustrious career includes prestigious victories at the Coca-Cola 600 in 2006, 2008, and 2012, as well as the Brickyard 400 in 2017. Spire Motorsports co-owner Jeff Dickerson expressed enthusiasm about Kahne’s return, stating, “Kasey is not only a legendary driver but is someone that Spire shares a long history with.” He emphasized the importance of having Kahne compete for a championship in one of their trucks.
Kahne’s return to the track began on April 19, 2025, when he finished 14th at Rockingham, North Carolina, in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, driving for Richard Childress Racing. Over his career, Kahne has made 529 starts in the Cup Series, along with eight wins in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and five in the Truck Series. His last appearance in the Truck Series was on May 15, 2015, in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Reflecting on his return, Kahne remarked, “When Jeff first asked me about running trucks for Spire Motorsports, I didn’t think he was serious. The thought of a return to pavement racing and involvement in something that I was a part of for so long was exciting.” He will debut in Spire’s No. 77 Chevrolet Silverado RST at the season opener in Daytona Beach, Florida, on February 19, 2027.
