Mashreq Bank has announced a new initiative aimed at supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UAE by introducing a one-day business account opening service. This development comes as SMEs face challenges such as global economic uncertainty and tighter liquidity, yet confidence in the sector remains robust, according to Raj Tatavarty, Head of Products & Digital, Business Banking at Mashreq, in an interview with Economy Middle East.
Tatavarty highlighted that despite the complexities of the current economic landscape, 75% of SMEs in the UAE are optimistic about the future. He noted that Mashreq has seen a record number of new account openings, indicating a strong entrepreneurial spirit among SMEs in the region.
Addressing Key Challenges for SMEs
One of the primary challenges for new businesses is the timely opening of a bank account. Many entrepreneurs travel to the UAE with the intention of setting up their business and expect to open a bank account during their visit. Delays in this process can hinder their operations significantly.
To address this, Mashreq’s one-day service promise allows entrepreneurs to apply for a business account digitally as soon as they receive their trade license. The bank has integrated its systems with the Dubai Unified License, enabling quick verification of documents through advanced technology, including Emirates Facial Recognition (EFR), which allows for remote account activation.
Support During Economic Challenges
In addition to facilitating account openings, Mashreq is also providing financial relief to SMEs facing cash flow issues. Eligible customers can receive interest relief for up to four months, helping them navigate current economic pressures.
Tatavarty emphasized that the one-day account opening service is backed by a guarantee; if the account is not opened within the promised timeframe, the bank will credit 1,000 dirhams to the customer’s account, reflecting their confidence in the process.
Enhancing Operational Resilience
Mashreq’s NeoBiz platform aims to simplify banking for SMEs, allowing them to manage their finances efficiently. The bank views its relationship with SMEs as a partnership, focusing on long-term growth and understanding their evolving needs.
Through the Mashreq Biz app, SMEs can conduct transactions, receive notifications about offers, and access financial relief measures. The bank also provides curated packages that include essential operational tools, such as accounting software and CRM systems, at discounted rates for NeoBiz customers.
Future Innovations
Looking ahead, Mashreq is exploring the integration of AI and open finance initiatives to further streamline the account opening process. This could potentially allow for instant account activation based on data from other banks, enhancing the overall customer experience.
As Mashreq continues to innovate, it remains committed to supporting the growth and resilience of SMEs in the UAE, ensuring they have the necessary tools and resources to thrive in a challenging economic environment.
