Dubai Dream: Ghanaian’s Journey from Cleaner to Entrepreneur and Meeting Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed

Maclean George, a Ghanaian national, moved to Dubai at the age of 20 to pursue his dream of becoming a professional football player. However, his journey took an unexpected turn, leading him to become an entrepreneur and ultimately meeting the UAE President, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Early Aspirations and Challenges

From a young age, George aspired to be the president of Ghana. His passion for football led him to local leagues, but he found limited opportunities for professional play in his home country. Motivated by someone he knew, he relocated to Dubai on November 12, 2021, to chase his football dreams. Upon arrival, he faced a significant setback when the individual who had encouraged him ceased communication. Undeterred, George secured a work visa with a cleaning company, choosing to persevere rather than return home.

George worked as a cleaner for nearly two years, taking on various jobs across Dubai. Despite the challenges, he remained committed to his dreams, drawing inspiration from the city’s dynamic environment, particularly the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). He frequently visited DIFC, finding motivation in its story of growth and transformation.

Inspiration from Dubai’s Landscape

George expressed admiration for the infrastructure and maintenance of Downtown Dubai, emphasizing the importance of understanding such systems for his future ambitions. He believed that knowledge of urban management would be crucial if he were to fulfill his dream of leading Ghana. His visits to DIFC and Downtown Dubai were not just leisure activities but strategic observations aimed at preparing himself for future leadership roles.

In 2022, George encountered a poster of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan alongside Pope Francis, which sparked a moment of reflection. He took a photo next to the image, contemplating the improbability of ever meeting the UAE President.

A Dream Realized

In March 2023, George’s dream became a reality when he unexpectedly met Sheikh Mohamed at Dubai Mall. His encounter garnered significant attention, with a video of the moment going viral. George recounted the experience, noting the overwhelming joy he felt during the interaction. This meeting served as a powerful reminder that dreams can indeed come true.

Transitioning to Entrepreneurship

At 25, George has transitioned from a cleaner to the owner of a luxury athleisure brand named MACLUX. His entrepreneurial journey was driven by a desire to help others, particularly when friends sought financial assistance. He recognized the need to generate more income to support those around him.

After exploring various avenues for additional income, George decided to launch his own business in 2024, utilizing savings accumulated from his cleaning job. He opted to start with a limited collection, collaborating with friends and suppliers from Turkey and China, while avoiding loans from friends or banks.

Future Aspirations

Looking ahead, George aims to expand his brand and diversify his offerings, aspiring to lead a global company. His motivation stems from a commitment to positively impact people’s lives, rooted in his understanding of financial struggles. He articulated a vision of rising from humble beginnings, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and belief in oneself.

George’s journey in Dubai has reinforced his conviction that anyone can achieve their dreams, regardless of their starting point. He hopes his story will inspire others, particularly those in service roles, to break free from limitations imposed by others.
