Global Oil Price Surge Drives Dubai Petrol Costs to New Highs

Fuel costs have become increasingly complex for consumers as daily news highlights market fluctuations and geopolitical tensions. The relationship between international crude oil prices and local petrol costs, however, is more straightforward than it may seem. Throughout 2026, global oil prices have experienced significant volatility, directly influencing retail fuel rates in Dubai and across the UAE.

In response to changes in international crude oil prices, local fuel committees adjust retail rates accordingly. The UAE decentralized petrol pricing in 2015 to better align with global market trends. As a result, drivers in Dubai are acutely aware of the financial implications of these adjustments. Analyzing the trajectory of crude oil prices from January to July reveals the reasons behind monthly price fluctuations.

A Calmer Start to the Year

The year began with relative stability in international energy markets. In January and February, Brent crude oil traded steadily between $69 and $71 per barrel, with stable supply chains and predictable global demand patterns.

This stability allowed Dubai motorists to benefit from some of the lowest fuel prices of the year. According to official historical data, Special 95 petrol was priced at AED 2.42 per liter in January, dropping to AED 2.33 in February. Special 98 remained steady at AED 2.45 per liter, providing consumers with a cost-effective start to 2026.

Geopolitical Conflicts Trigger Price Surges

The situation changed dramatically in March and April as military conflicts escalated in the Middle East. Market traders expressed concern over potential shipping disruptions in crucial sea lanes, including the Strait of Hormuz.

As a result, global oil prices surged, with Brent crude rising from below $70 per barrel to an average of $99.40 in March and exceeding $102.81 in April. The UAE Fuel Price Committee responded promptly to these international price hikes, with Special 95 increasing to AED 2.48 per liter in March. The most significant increase occurred in April, when Special 95 jumped to AED 3.28 per liter, and Super 98 reached AED 3.39 per liter. Diesel prices also soared, impacting commercial transport, which saw prices rise to AED 4.69 per liter.

Brent Crude Breaks High Thresholds

The upward trend in oil prices persisted through May, driven by ongoing military threats and security concerns surrounding vital shipping routes. Data from the St. Louis Fed FRED indicated that the monthly average price for Brent crude peaked at $103.84 per barrel during this period.

The elevated oil prices translated into higher retail fuel costs across the UAE. By May, Special 95 was priced at AED 3.55 per liter, while Super 98 reached AED 3.66 per liter. The steep increases prompted many residents to reconsider their driving habits and explore alternative transportation options.

Diplomatic Negotiations Offer Temporary Relief

By June, international diplomatic efforts and tentative ceasefire negotiations began to restore some market confidence. Traders anticipated the reopening of shipping lanes, which alleviated panic buying in energy markets.

Consequently, global oil prices retreated from their spring peaks, with Brent crude falling to the range of $72 to $84 per barrel by late June. Despite this decline, retail prices in Dubai remained elevated, with Special 95 reaching AED 3.83 per liter. However, relief arrived on July 1, 2026, as authorities announced significant price reductions. Special 95 dropped to AED 3.29 per liter, and Super 98 fell to AED 3.40 per liter, providing much-needed savings for UAE households.

Crude Breaches $100 Once Again

While early July offered some price relief, the situation quickly changed due to renewed conflicts. On July 23, 2026, energy markets surged sharply following new military actions in the Middle East and attacks on oil tankers in the Red Sea.

Market data from Investing.com showed that Brent crude briefly hit $100 per barrel on July 23. The renewed concerns regarding supply security had immediate repercussions across global stock and commodity exchanges. As oil prices climbed rapidly towards the end of the month, analysts began adjusting their forecasts for upcoming retail fuel prices.

Looking Ahead to What Dubai Drivers Can Expect

As July comes to a close, UAE motorists are closely monitoring the anticipated August fuel price announcement. The UAE Fuel Price Committee typically reveals adjusted rates on the last day of each month, which take effect on the first of the following month.

Given the sharp spike in global oil prices in late July, market analysts predict an increase in local petrol prices for August. While early July benefitted from lower crude averages from June, the sudden rise above $100 per barrel is expected to lead to upward corrections. Drivers in Dubai should prepare for higher costs at the pump starting August 1, 2026. Staying informed about international energy trends will be crucial for managing monthly vehicle expenses.
