The Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) has successfully retained its title as the world’s largest fair for copyright trading for the sixth consecutive year, solidifying Sharjah’s status as a pivotal hub for the global publishing industry. This achievement was highlighted during the recent 16th Sharjah International Publishers Conference, which saw a remarkable increase in professional meetings focused on publishing and translation rights.
Over two days, the conference facilitated 7,980 scheduled meetings, a significant rise from 3,321 in the previous edition, marking an increase of over 140 percent. The event attracted 1,888 publishers from 126 countries, showcasing Sharjah’s growing influence in the international literary market.
Significant Growth in Professional Engagement
Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), attributed this success to the vision of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, who has emphasized the importance of books and knowledge in the emirate’s cultural development. Al Ameri stated, “The Sharjah International Book Fair’s global leadership in buying and selling copyrights reflects the lasting impact of this vision.” He noted that Sharjah has become a key destination on the international publishing calendar, fostering partnerships that facilitate the exchange of books and ideas across cultures.
The conference featured 30 specialized roundtables and programs aimed at enhancing collaboration among publishing industry leaders. Topics included adapting books for film and television, digital marketing, and the protection of authors’ rights. The introduction of the Global Exchange program this year brought together publishers and literary agents from various regions to discuss collaboration opportunities and challenges within the publishing landscape.
Expanding Opportunities for Publishers
Mansour Al Hassani, Director of Publishing Services at SBA, emphasized the conference’s role in helping publishers forge partnerships tailored to their specific markets. He remarked, “These meetings resulted in agreements to translate literary and intellectual works, publish titles across a range of subjects, and bring them to new markets.” The SBA aims to extend the conference’s impact beyond the event, enabling ongoing negotiations and the development of joint projects that enhance the competitiveness of the publishing sector.
In addition to the professional meetings, the conference included the PublisHer Lounge, which offered workshops and networking opportunities specifically for women in publishing, further promoting diversity within the industry.
The Sharjah International Book Fair continues to set benchmarks in the global publishing arena, reinforcing the emirate’s commitment to cultural exchange and the promotion of literature. As the fair grows, it not only enhances Sharjah’s reputation but also contributes to the broader goals of fostering a vibrant literary community.
