Global stocks rise and dollar weakens following Democrats’ midterm election victories

Published:

Global stock markets rebounded on Wednesday following the Democratic Party’s unexpected victories in the U.S. midterm elections, which resulted in control of both the Senate and the House. This political shift has raised concerns among investors about potential regulatory scrutiny on the rapidly growing artificial intelligence (AI) sector, contributing to a decline in the U.S. dollar.

As the election results unfolded, global equities recovered from earlier losses. The MSCI All-World index rose by 0.3%, while Europe’s STOXX 600 index surged 1.4%, reaching two-month highs. U.S. stock futures also reversed course, climbing approximately 1% after initially dropping by as much as 2% overnight.

Deborah Cunningham, chief investment officer at Federated Hermes, noted, “The blue wave means the federal government is sure to be divided on most issues,” suggesting that this gridlock could create a favorable environment for financial markets as uncertainty diminishes. However, the prospect of increased scrutiny on AI from a Democratic-controlled Congress has left some investors cautious.

Market Reactions and Sector Implications

AI stocks in Asia were among the first to react negatively to the election results, leading to declines in equity markets. In contrast, safe-haven assets such as bonds and the Swiss franc gained traction. Shares of Tesla and SpaceX, which Elon Musk plans to merge, fell by approximately 4.5% to 5% in premarket trading, while other major tech stocks saw modest gains.

Kathleen Brooks, research director at XTB, commented on the market’s response, stating, “Overall, these results have had a mild impact on markets so far.” She emphasized that investors are likely to shift their focus from the uncertainty of election outcomes to the implications for policy moving forward. Despite the challenges posed by potential AI regulation, semiconductor stocks, crucial to the AI sector, may continue to perform well.

Currency and Treasury Movements

The election outcome has also influenced currency markets, with the U.S. dollar weakening against several currencies. The Mexican peso strengthened, contributing to a nearly 1% decline in the dollar, while the Canadian dollar also gained ground. Emerging-market bonds, including those from Ukraine and Gulf nations, saw price increases as well.

In the treasury market, yields on the benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury note fell to 4.92%, down 3 basis points on the day. This decline reflects investor expectations of reduced government spending and a potential slowdown in growth due to AI regulation, which could lessen the need for interest rate hikes.

Prashant Newnaha, senior rates strategist at TD Securities, remarked, “Bonds are coming out as the clear winner as markets put the AI trade on the chopping block.” This sentiment underscores the shifting dynamics in investor priorities following the election.

Oil Market Volatility

In the oil market, prices experienced fluctuations after hitting a four-week low in the previous session. Investors are weighing the potential impacts of ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran against concerns that recent attacks could disrupt supply chains. As of Wednesday, Brent crude was trading at $103.17 per barrel, down 0.4% on the day.

The implications of the midterm election results extend beyond immediate market reactions, potentially influencing U.S. fiscal policy and various sectors, including defense, healthcare, and banking. As investors digest these developments, the focus will likely shift to how the new political landscape will shape future economic policies.

According to Gulf Today, the evolving situation will require close monitoring as markets adjust to the new realities of a divided government.
