Apple’s first folding phone, the Duo, officially launches in stores on Friday, introducing a flexible display to its iPhone lineup. However, the device comes with unique care and maintenance considerations that potential buyers should be aware of, especially as many preorders are reportedly facing delays into January.
While Apple has yet to release official care guidelines for the Duo, insights from competitors like Samsung and Google provide valuable advice for maintaining folding devices. These recommendations highlight the importance of protecting both the screen and hinge, which are critical to the phone’s functionality.
Screen Protection Essentials
Folding phones, including the Duo, feature both a rigid outer screen and a flexible inner display. For the outer screen, protective covers are readily available from various retailers. However, the inner screen requires more careful handling. Samsung and Google have both cautioned against removing or applying third-party screen protectors to their devices, as doing so can void warranties and lead to damage.
Apple appears to be following a similar approach. Kate Bergeron, Apple’s vice president of hardware engineering, indicated that the Duo will have a replaceable cover layer on its folding screen, which can be swapped out for a new one. This feature is reflected in AppleCare’s service price list, which lists the cover layer replacement at $19.
Hinge Maintenance Tips
The hinge mechanism is often the most vulnerable part of a folding phone. Experts recommend avoiding environments where sand and dust are prevalent, as these particles can infiltrate the hinge and cause damage. Ben Wood, a tech analyst at FDM CCS Insight, advises against using the phone at the beach due to the risk of sand entering the hinge mechanism.
In addition, if users notice unusual noises when folding the phone, it may indicate that debris has entered the mechanism, and they should refrain from further use until it can be inspected.
Handling Strong Magnets
Folding phones like the Duo utilize strong magnets to keep the device closed, which can attract metallic objects that may scratch or damage the screen. Users are advised to avoid storing the phone in the same pocket or bag as keys or coins. Additionally, care should be taken not to bend the phone backward or apply excessive force when opening or closing it, as this could lead to screen damage.
Honor, another manufacturer of folding devices, warns against using their phones in extremely cold conditions, as the screen may become brittle and more susceptible to cracking. They also recommend not leaving the phone closed for extended periods to prevent stress on the screen and hinge.
As the Duo hits the market, potential buyers should consider these care tips to ensure the longevity and performance of their new device. For more detailed guidance, users can refer to established practices from other manufacturers in the folding phone space.
