Zverev and Gauff advance to fourth round at US Open as American hopes falter

Published:

Top seed Alexander Zverev and fourth seed Coco Gauff have both advanced to the fourth round of the US Open, as reported by Emirates247. Their progress comes amid a disappointing day for American players, many of whom faced early exits at Flushing Meadows.

Zverev continued his quest for a second Grand Slam title with a convincing 6-2, 7-6(2), 6-2 victory over Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo. After enduring two challenging five-set matches earlier in the tournament, the German star found the match more manageable, despite a slight dip in performance during the second set.

The 26-year-old expressed satisfaction with his performance, noting that it was an improvement compared to his previous matches. Meanwhile, Gauff also secured her place in the next round, defeating Spain’s Cristina Bucsa 6-3, 6-4. The 2023 champion is now on the hunt for her third Grand Slam title.

In another notable match, Japan’s Naomi Osaka overcame both physical and mental hurdles to defeat Belgium’s Elise Mertens 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. The two-time US Open champion managed to recover after losing a set and dealing with an Achilles issue during the match.

Osaka’s victory sets up a fourth-round clash against second seed Elena Rybakina, who triumphed over Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva with a score of 7-6(6), 6-3. American teenager Iva Jovic also made headlines by edging out Filipina Alexandra Eala 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in a match that lasted over three hours. Jovic will next face Gauff.

On a less positive note for American fans, ninth seed Taylor Fritz suffered a shocking defeat after squandering a two-set lead, losing to Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. This marks Fritz’s earliest exit from the US Open in four years, following his runner-up finish last year.

Madison Keys also faced disappointment, as she was eliminated by China’s Zheng Qinwen, who made a remarkable comeback from 5-0 down in the deciding set to win 1-6, 7-6(3), 7-5. Last year’s runner-up Amanda Anisimova was defeated by Russia’s Anastasia Potapova with a score of 6-2, 7-5.

In a bright spot for American fans, wildcard Learner Tien managed to secure a victory against Czech player Jakub Mensik, winning 6-3, 1-6, 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the last 16.
