India clinched a thrilling four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the second T20 match at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Saturday, taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. The tourists, chasing a target of 181, scored 68 runs in the last 4.5 overs, sealing the win with a ball to spare after being reduced to 70-5 at one point.
Tilak Varma was the standout performer for India, scoring an impressive 51 not out off just 26 balls. Nitish Kumar Reddy contributed significantly as well, finishing the match with an unbeaten 26 off 13 deliveries. This victory mirrored India’s four-wicket win in the series opener, which also took place at the same venue just two days earlier.
Reflecting on the match, Tilak expressed confidence despite the mounting pressure, stating, “I wanted to take the game as deep as possible and I have done it, so I’m really proud of myself.” He emphasized the strategy of navigating New Zealand’s spinners before targeting their seamers in the final overs.
New Zealand’s bowling attack was led by captain Mitchell Santner, who took 4 wickets for 21 runs. His efforts, however, were not enough to prevent India from executing a successful chase. Santner lamented the missed opportunities, noting that one more wicket could have turned the tide in favor of his team.
On the batting front, New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips shone with the bat, scoring 70 runs off 43 balls, helping his team recover from a precarious 41-3 to post a total of 180-5. Bevon Jacobs also made a valuable contribution with 58 runs off 46 balls. India’s best bowler was Arshdeep Singh, who took 2 wickets for 33 runs in his four overs.
The series now moves to Wellington for the third match on Tuesday, where India will look to extend their lead, while New Zealand aims to bounce back and keep the series competitive.
