Sharjah Makes History as First Arab Guest of Honour at Warsaw International Book Fair 2026
Sharjah has officially inaugurated its participation as the first Arab Guest of Honour at the Warsaw International Book Fair 2026, marking a significant milestone in cultural diplomacy. The event commenced on May 25, 2026, and will run until May 31 at the National Stadium in Warsaw. Her Highness Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), leads the Sharjah delegation, which showcases a rich tapestry of Emirati and Arab culture developed over the past five decades.
Cultural Significance of the Event
The opening ceremony featured prominent figures including HE Włodzimierz Czarzasty, Marshal of the Sejm of Poland; HE Marta Cienkowska, Poland’s Minister of Culture and National Heritage; and Dorota Malinowska-Grupińska, Chairwoman of the Warsaw City Council. The event underscores the importance of cultural exchange, with Czarzasty emphasizing that hosting Sharjah is a cultural honour for Poland.
Sheikha Bodour conveyed greetings from His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, expressing his belief that literature fosters meaningful dialogue between civilizations. She highlighted that culture is not merely a heritage to be preserved but a bridge that connects diverse peoples.
A Diverse Cultural Programme
Sharjah’s participation includes 21 cultural institutions and 36 Emirati creatives, presenting a comprehensive cultural programme that encompasses literature, heritage, arts, music, and intercultural dialogue. The Sharjah National Band is set to perform heritage shows at the National Theatre and various locations throughout Warsaw. The fair features over 1,200 events, solidifying its status as one of Central Europe’s premier cultural platforms.
Sheikha Bodour articulated the theme of Sharjah’s participation, “Two Civilisations. One Language of Letters,” which reflects the notion that understanding between civilizations requires patience, curiosity, and empathy. She expressed hope that the fair would catalyze ongoing dialogue between Warsaw and Sharjah.
Key Remarks from Polish Officials
HE Marta Cienkowska commended Sharjah for its deep respect for Polish culture and history, emphasizing that cultural exchange is vital for fostering understanding among peoples. Dorota Malinowska-Grupińska remarked that Sharjah’s presence as Guest of Honour highlights the role of publishing in promoting cultural dialogue.
Jacek Oryl, Director of the Warsaw International Book Fair, noted that Sharjah’s selection as Guest of Honour represents a pivotal moment in the fair’s history, reflecting the strengthening cultural ties between Poland and the UAE. He stated that the emirate’s participation offers insights into Arab and Emirati culture through literature and the arts.
The IKAR Publishing Season Awards
The inaugural day of the fair also featured the IKAR Publishing Season Awards ceremony. Polish author Professor Stefan Chwin received the Ikar Award for his contributions to literature and humanitarian efforts. Other honorees included Piotr Dobrołęcki, awarded for his literary contributions, and Wydawnictwo Czarne, recognized for enriching Poland’s publishing landscape.
Engaging Cultural Activities
Sharjah’s pavilion spans 400 square meters and showcases a diverse array of cultural and academic institutions. The emirate’s participation includes 35 cultural events, featuring 28 panel discussions, four poetry evenings, and three children’s workshops. Additionally, 18 musical performances by the Sharjah National Band will introduce audiences to traditional Emirati arts.
The project Tasawurat (“Visions”) is a key component of the programme, bringing together ten artists and designers from the UAE and Poland to create works inspired by Arabic and Polish poetry. This initiative explores themes of humanity, nature, and existential reflection, merging Arabic poetic traditions with Poland’s visual culture.
Sharjah’s participation aims to transform Warsaw into an open platform for cultural exchange, introducing audiences to the rich history and contemporary aspects of Emirati and Arab culture.
