MoHRE Accelerates UAE Work Permit Services with Simplified Procedures and Enhanced Digital Access
The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has initiated a significant upgrade to the UAE’s Work Permit Services, aimed at streamlining processes and enhancing digital access for both employers and workers. The consultation aims to evaluate current work permit issuance procedures and identify opportunities for reducing administrative requirements. Authorities believe that this initiative will lead to more efficient services while ensuring that labor laws and regulations are upheld effectively. Building on the Zero Government Bureaucracy Programme
The latest enhancements build upon the changes introduced under the UAE’s Zero Government Bureaucracy Programme. Previous updates have already significantly reduced paperwork requirements and streamlined application processes for work permits.
MoHRE reports that the elimination of supporting document requirements for work permit applications has been a key achievement. Furthermore, mandatory data fields for various permit categories have been reduced by 75 to 97 percent. These measures have already contributed to shorter processing times and improved service efficiency. The current phase of reforms aims to further these gains, making services faster, more accessible, and easier for businesses and workers alike.
Unified Digital Platforms for Faster Services
A central feature of the initiative is the expansion of digital service channels. MoHRE has integrated work permit services into its unified digital platforms, allowing employers and applicants to complete transactions and submit applications online, minimizing the need for extensive paperwork and in-person visits.
Officials have indicated that this digital transformation will facilitate quicker approvals, enhance user experiences, and provide more seamless access to labor-related services. The ministry has reiterated its commitment to offering flexible and integrated government services that support private-sector growth, protect workers’ rights, and promote labor market sustainability.
Thirteen Types of Work Permits Available
Currently, MoHRE issues 13 distinct types of work permits tailored to meet the diverse needs of employers and workers in the UAE. Among these is the Work Permit for Recruitment from Outside the UAE, which enables companies to hire foreign workers under specific conditions and is valid for two years. Additionally, employers can obtain a Transfer Work Permit to hire individuals already residing in the UAE after their previous employment has concluded.
Special Permits for Students, Minors, and Freelancers
MoHRE also provides specialized permit categories aimed at broadening employment opportunities for various segments of society. This includes the Juvenile Work Permit, which allows individuals aged 15 to 18 to work under conditions that ensure their safety and well-being. The Student Training and Employment Permit enables eligible students to gain work experience while continuing their education.
Additional categories include permits for UAE and GCC nationals, Golden Residency holders, trainee Emiratis, and freelancers seeking to engage in self-employment activities without the need for traditional employer sponsorship. Through these reforms, MoHRE aims to foster a more flexible, efficient, and future-ready labor market that supports economic growth while addressing the evolving needs of businesses and workers throughout the UAE.
