Wildfires Force Evacuations of Over 325,000 as France and Spain Combat Spreading Blazes

Bordeaux/Madrid: Wildfires have surged toward the outskirts of Bordeaux, prompting the evacuation of over 325,000 individuals across France and Spain. The escalating situation has necessitated emergency aid from various European nations.

French authorities reported that approximately 220,000 people have been evacuated, while in Spain, over 75,000 residents have been forced to leave their homes, with an additional 30,000 advised to shelter in place. It’s very difficult to extinguish from a technical standpoint, especially because of the adverse weather conditions that will continue throughout the day.” The blaze has encroached upon the Sierra de Espadán Natural Park, known for its extensive pine forests and cork oak woodlands.

Scientists have attributed the increasing intensity of wildfires across southern Europe to prolonged drought conditions and recurring heatwaves exacerbated by climate change. Data from the Reuters Climate Monitor indicates that average July temperatures in both Bordeaux and Ávila have reached approximately 32°C, nearly 6°C above the historical average recorded between 1961 and 1990.

European Support Mobilised

In response to the crisis, the European Union’s civil protection mechanism has been activated. Greece and Italy have each dispatched two Canadair firefighting aircraft to Spain, while Portugal has contributed over 100 military personnel and equipment. The Spanish Interior Ministry announced that two additional firefighting aircraft from Türkiye are expected to arrive shortly.

Sánchez declared that Spain would issue a civil protection emergency for the affected central provinces on Tuesday, which will unlock additional funding for recovery efforts. He noted that more than 150,000 hectares have burned across Spain since January, a figure six times greater than the area affected during the same period last year.

Scotland and Italy Also Affected

In Scotland, approximately 500 firefighters have been engaged in combating a significant wildfire in Cairngorms National Park since July 15. Residents of Nethy Bridge, who were evacuated due to shifting weather conditions, were permitted to return home late Saturday.

Meanwhile, several bushfires in Italy have led to the closure of parts of Rome’s ring road and a motorway leading into the capital, causing considerable traffic disruptions. In the southern region of Puglia, tourists have been evacuated from seaside resorts in the Gargano area due to a large wildfire, with some being assisted by the coast guard for evacuation by sea.
