Record Wildfires in France and Spain Force Over 300,000 Evacuations Amid Historic Crisis
Paris: France and Spain are currently facing unprecedented wildfires that have led to the evacuation of over 300,000 individuals, marking one of the largest evacuation operations in Europe since World War II. The wildfires, exacerbated by extreme heat, drought, and strong winds, have devastated extensive areas in both nations, placing immense strain on emergency services.
Factors Contributing to the Severity of Fires
Experts attribute the intensity of these wildfires to a combination of prolonged heatwaves and significantly below-average rainfall across Europe. France’s national meteorological service, Météo-France, reported that June was the hottest month on record for the country, with temperatures averaging 3.8°C above normal and rainfall nearly 50% below average. This extreme heat has parched vegetation, creating conditions conducive to rapid fire spread and increased intensity. Climate researchers have also connected these record-breaking temperatures to climate change.
Spain, which is accustomed to summer wildfires, has seen conditions deteriorate as hotter and drier summers become more frequent.
Record Areas Affected by Wildfires
Authorities from both the European Union and national governments have indicated that the scale of destruction is among the worst ever documented. The European Forest Fire Information System estimates that over 300,000 hectares have been scorched across France and Spain this year alone. The French Interior Ministry has reported that 115,000 hectares have been lost to fire since January, the highest annual figure in modern French history. In Spain, 153,000 hectares have burned in 2026, which is six times more than during the same period in 2025, according to Ecological Transition Minister Sara Aagesen.
One of the most significant fires is raging west of Madrid in the province of Ávila, where more than 50,000 hectares have been impacted. Earlier this month, a wildfire in Almería claimed the lives of 13 individuals, marking it as Spain’s deadliest blaze in recent memory.
Extensive Evacuation Efforts Underway
In France, over 250,000 people have been evacuated, including approximately 220,000 residents and visitors from the southwestern Gironde region. Authorities have implemented measures to restrict tourist arrivals as the country approaches its peak summer holiday season, including limitations on holiday camps.
In Spain, 76,000 individuals have been evacuated, with an additional 30,000 residents instructed to stay indoors. European Union officials have characterized this operation as one of the largest evacuation efforts in Europe in recent decades.
International Assistance Mobilized
Numerous countries have dispatched aircraft, helicopters, and firefighting teams to assist France and Spain under the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism. European Commissioner for Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib confirmed that the EU has provided:
- Seven aircraft and four helicopters to France
- Six additional firefighting aircraft to Spain
Support has been extended from countries including Czechia, Croatia, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Slovakia, Sweden, Türkiye, and others. The EU’s Copernicus satellite program is also aiding authorities with real-time fire monitoring and risk assessment data.
Signs of Progress Amid Ongoing Challenges
French authorities have reported initial signs that the spread of a major fire in the Gironde region may be slowing. However, meteorologists caution that rising temperatures expected later this week could complicate firefighting efforts and elevate the risk of new outbreaks. Firefighters in Spain have described some blazes as so intense that they cannot be directly attacked and must instead be contained through defensive strategies.
While emergency crews continue to work tirelessly, officials warn that the fire season is not yet over, with dry conditions and extreme temperatures anticipated to persist across parts of southern Europe.
