Cairo: Diplomatic mediators are reportedly making headway in efforts to facilitate negotiations between the United States and Iran, aiming to avert a broader conflict in the Middle East. This development follows a three-day period during which neither nation reported military actions, providing a temporary lull after nearly two weeks of escalating tensions that raised concerns about a wider regional war.
Qatar and Pakistan Leading Mediation Efforts
According to two regional officials familiar with the discussions, mediation initiatives spearheaded by Qatar and Pakistan are focused on reconciling differences between Washington and Tehran. These efforts aim to restore an interim ceasefire that had been compromised by recent hostilities. The United States had previously suspended military operations after conducting strikes targeting Iranian coastal infrastructure, which were prompted by Iranian actions against vessels in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz indicated that President Donald Trump is allowing diplomatic efforts to unfold. He noted that the President is providing “some space” for talks to progress, with Oman, Iran, and other intermediaries actively engaged in discussions at various levels.
Iran Confirms Indirect Contacts
Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, stated that mediators continue to convey messages between the two nations, although no direct negotiations are currently underway. He mentioned that while mediators may relay communications from the American side regarding regional developments, there are no active negotiations at this time.
Baghaei also highlighted that several rounds of discussions have occurred between Iran and Oman concerning the management of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The goal is for both nations to establish mechanisms that ensure safe navigation while safeguarding their respective sovereignty and security interests. However, he emphasized that the status of the Strait of Hormuz remains unchanged and that the waterway is still closed.
Strait of Hormuz Remains Central Issue
One regional official characterized the progress made by mediators as “significant,” noting that discussions surrounding vessel transit through the Strait of Hormuz have become a focal point of negotiations. This waterway is one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, typically facilitating approximately one-fifth of global oil shipments.
The current 60-day interim period established between the United States and Iran in June is nearing its conclusion, with several contentious issues—such as Iran’s nuclear program—still unresolved. Mediators are concentrating on preventing a return to active conflict.
Shipping and Energy Concerns Persist
Despite the recent pause in military actions, maritime security concerns persist in both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. The US military announced that its naval blockade measures against Iran remain in effect, with US forces having redirected multiple commercial vessels, disabled two ships, and boarded two others during enforcement operations.
Recent reports indicate that commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has dropped to its lowest level in three weeks, as monitored by a maritime body overseen by the US Navy. While no confirmed attacks have occurred in the last 72 hours, shipping activity in the strait remains significantly below normal levels.
Regional Diplomacy Continues
These diplomatic efforts coincide with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s upcoming visit to Washington for discussions with President Trump. The ongoing conflict has also heightened tensions along Israel’s northern border with Lebanon, where Hezbollah became involved shortly after hostilities began. The United States has supported dialogue between Lebanon and Israel to mitigate tensions and address Hezbollah’s military presence.
While the pause in military operations has sparked hopes for de-escalation, officials have cautioned that significant political and security challenges remain unresolved, leaving the future of ceasefire efforts uncertain.
