Iran and Israel Halt Strikes Amid U.S. Ceasefire Appeal, Tensions Remain High

Iran and Israel announced on Monday that they had ceased hostilities following a call from U.S. President Donald Trump urging both nations to “stop shooting.” However, Iranian officials warned that they would resume attacks if Israel continued its operations in Lebanon.

The recent escalation marked the most significant confrontation between Iran and Israel since a ceasefire was declared in April. This renewed violence poses a threat to U.S. diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict that has persisted for over three months.

Recent Escalation and Market Reactions

In the wake of the attacks, oil prices surged by as much as 5% before retreating after Iran’s military confirmed the conclusion of its initial wave of strikes against Israel. The U.S. dollar also fell from its highest level in nearly two months. A source familiar with the situation indicated that Israel had also decided to halt its attacks on Iranian targets.

The escalation began when Tehran launched missiles toward Israeli territory late Sunday, which it characterized as retaliation for Israeli strikes on Hezbollah positions near Beirut. In response, Israel targeted a petrochemical facility in southwestern Iran, claiming it was involved in ballistic missile production. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran stated that it retaliated by targeting a similar facility in Haifa.

Military Responses and Statements

Iran’s military headquarters declared that it had “delivered a painful response” to Israel’s actions in Lebanon, specifically referencing the strikes on the outskirts of Beirut. They emphasized that while military operations were currently halted, any further aggression—particularly in southern Lebanon—would provoke a more severe response.

This exchange of fire complicates U.S. efforts to mediate an end to the conflict, which began on February 28. Although a ceasefire was announced on April 8, sporadic flare-ups have continued in the Gulf region.

In a series of social media posts, Trump stated that both Israel and Iran desired an “immediate CEASEFIRE!” He also noted that negotiations for peace were ongoing but cautioned that ignorance or stupidity could hinder progress. Trump reiterated that a U.S. blockade of Iranian ports would remain until a final agreement was reached.

Diplomatic Efforts and Regional Implications

An Israeli official confirmed that Trump had spoken with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday. Earlier, an Israeli military spokesperson indicated that Israel was prepared to continue its operations indefinitely, confirming strikes on newly rebuilt Iranian air defense systems in addition to the petrochemical facility.

Iranian officials maintained a defiant stance, with a military source quoted by the semi-official Tasnim news agency asserting that Tehran was prepared for a prolonged conflict and could renew strikes against U.S. interests in the region.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei remarked that Tehran was communicating with Washington amid an atmosphere of “extreme suspicion.” He suggested that Israel’s actions in Lebanon, whether or not conducted with U.S. consent, were aimed at undermining diplomatic efforts.

In Tehran, reports emerged of explosions, with air defenses intercepting a drone over the capital. No immediate casualties or significant damage were reported.

Houthi Involvement and Broader Regional Dynamics

The Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen issued a statement promising to disrupt Israeli maritime navigation in the Red Sea and claimed to have launched missiles at Israel. While the Houthis have largely refrained from direct involvement in the regional conflict, they control strategic territory at the mouth of the Red Sea, crucial for oil transport.

An Israeli military official reported that Iran had launched nearly 30 ballistic missiles at Israel since Sunday evening, with the Houthis contributing an additional two missiles. Israel retaliated by targeting the Mahshahr petrochemical complex, which is believed to be involved in Iran’s missile program. A provincial official confirmed that parts of the facility were damaged.

Iran’s National Emergency Organization reported that 15 individuals were injured in the latest Israeli strikes, primarily in Mahshahr County, though no fatalities were recorded. The Israeli ambulance service indicated that there were no reported casualties from the missile launches directed at Israel.

Ongoing Lebanese-Israeli Negotiations

Israel has maintained its military campaign in Lebanon, which has resulted in significant casualties, asserting that it should be considered separately from any ceasefire with Iran. Hezbollah has continued its attacks, further complicating the situation.

Tehran has consistently stated that any peace agreement with the U.S. hinges on a cessation of hostilities in Lebanon. The U.S. ambassador to Lebanon, Michel Issa, announced that Lebanese-Israeli negotiations are set to resume in Washington.

Iran has continued to obstruct shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil transport, while the U.S. has imposed its own blockade on Iranian ports. Trump has emphasized that any peace deal must prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Iran’s demands in negotiations include the lifting of international sanctions, the release of billions of dollars in frozen assets, and recognition of its influence over the Strait of Hormuz.
