At Least 22 Killed as Russia Launches Massive Drone and Missile Assault on Ukraine
Early Tuesday, Russia unleashed a significant aerial offensive against Ukraine, deploying hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles. This assault resulted in the deaths of at least 22 individuals and left more than 100 others injured, according to local authorities.
Overview of the Attack
The strikes targeted multiple cities, including Kyiv and Dnipro, and followed Russian threats of “systematic” attacks on the Ukrainian capital. These threats came after a drone strike on a dormitory in the Luhansk region, which is under Russian control. Ukrainian officials have denied any involvement in the attack on the dormitory.
This marks the third major assault on Kyiv in less than a month. Since the onset of the invasion in 2022, Russian forces have persistently targeted Ukrainian urban centers.
Stalled Diplomatic Efforts
Amidst the ongoing conflict, U.S.-brokered negotiations regarding the war in Ukraine have stalled, as Washington shifts its focus toward Iran. While Russian military advances have decelerated this year, Ukraine has intensified its operations against Russian oil refineries.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia launched 73 missiles and over 600 drones during the overnight assault. He has called on the United States to supply additional Patriot missile interceptors to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
“This was a large-scale attack and an absolutely clear statement from Russia: if Ukraine is not protected from ballistic and other missile strikes, these attacks will continue,” Zelenskyy stated on Telegram.
Kremlin’s Response and International Reactions
The Kremlin has characterized the conflict as entering a “new paradigm,” accusing Ukraine of committing “inhumane acts of terror” against civilians. This rhetoric mirrors accusations that Kyiv has leveled against Russian forces.
In a letter to U.S. President Donald Trump and Congress, Zelenskyy requested air defense systems. As of Monday, officials indicated that he had not received a response. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has urged international partners to take decisive actions to support Ukraine, advocating for stricter sanctions and increased military assistance.
“Moscow is losing on the battlefield. No number of missiles can change this. What we can change is Russia’s ability to continue terror,” Sybiha remarked.
The United States has been a primary supplier of military aid to Ukraine, and Kyiv has also been acquiring Patriot missiles through a NATO initiative funded by European allies.
Humanitarian Impact and Civilian Casualties
The ongoing conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of fatalities and displaced a significant portion of Ukraine’s population. Russian forces currently control approximately one-fifth of the country. Both sides have denied targeting civilians, although Ukraine has also struck civilian sites in Russia and Russian-occupied territories.
Recent images from Kyiv depicted large explosions and plumes of smoke rising from high-rise buildings. Local officials reported that six individuals were killed and over 80 injured in the capital. Eyewitness Olha Mudra described the chaos, stating, “We couldn’t understand what was happening – some kind of apocalypse?” as she stood at the site of one strike with her daughter.
In Dnipro, local officials reported that 16 people were killed overnight, including two young boys. The city was targeted again later in the day, resulting in additional injuries.
The assault on Kyiv damaged at least nine high-rise buildings, a kindergarten, a clinic, and various administrative buildings. The attack temporarily disrupted power for 140,000 residents, according to the power company DTEK. More than 40,000 individuals sought refuge in the Kyiv subway system, marking the largest influx in recent years.
Advanced Military Technology
Ukraine’s Air Force confirmed that the assault included 33 ballistic missiles and eight Zircon hypersonic missiles, marking the largest deployment of such advanced munitions in the conflict to date. The Zircon missile, which has a range of 1,000 kilometers (625 miles) and can travel at nine times the speed of sound, poses a significant challenge for defense systems.
Ukrainian forces reported successfully intercepting or neutralizing 40 missiles and 602 drones during the attack, although no Zircon missiles were among those downed.
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed responsibility for a “massive strike” targeting defense industry facilities, asserting that its strikes hit ten military production sites in Kyiv.
In the northeastern Kharkiv region, a child was among 14 individuals injured in the attacks. NATO member Poland responded by scrambling military jets to secure its airspace following the Russian strikes.
Cross-Border Incidents
Russian territories also experienced attacks. The Ilsky oil refinery in the Krasnodar region caught fire due to a drone strike, which Ukraine’s military confirmed. In the Belgorod region, bordering Ukraine, an 11-year-old boy sustained injuries from a Ukrainian drone strike on a residential area.
Russian news agencies reported that 148 Ukrainian drones were downed overnight, according to the defense ministry. However, independent verification of all reports remains unconfirmed.
