Dubai Municipality has awarded contracts totaling US $816 million for four new projects aimed at enhancing the emirate’s stormwater drainage network as part of Phase 3 of the ‘Tasreef’ Programme. This initiative is crucial for improving the city’s infrastructure resilience and capacity to manage stormwater effectively.
The awarded contracts will facilitate the construction and extension of 100 kilometers of main stormwater drainage lines, with diameters reaching up to 3 meters. This expansion is expected to significantly bolster the operational resilience of Dubai’s drainage system, which is vital for the city’s economic, commercial, industrial, and tourism sectors.
Project Scope and Areas of Impact
The new projects will cover nearly 100 square kilometers and include the development of stormwater drainage systems in key areas such as Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Safa, Al Manara, Al Quoz, Al Barsha, Al Wasl, Za’abeel, Al Bada’a, Al Satwa, and Al Marmoom. These enhancements will connect these neighborhoods to the main stormwater drainage network managed by Dubai Municipality.
According to the municipality, these projects will not only increase the network’s water-flow capacity but also support sustainable urban growth and enhance the city’s readiness for climate-related challenges. The Tasreef Programme, classified as the largest integrated stormwater collection initiative in the region, aims to improve drainage capacity by 700% and reduce operational costs by 20%.
Strategic Importance of the Tasreef Programme
Implemented at a total cost of US $8.2 billion, the Tasreef Programme is designed to provide a highly resilient drainage system that meets Dubai’s future requirements. Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, emphasized the importance of this initiative in enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of the city’s infrastructure. He stated, “Our objective is to build a comprehensive and integrated model for a leading future city, characterised by a sustainable urban system and advanced infrastructure.”
The Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim Stormwater Drainage Network Development Project is particularly noteworthy, as it aims to enhance infrastructure readiness along strategic corridors, serving communities from Umm Suqeim to Jumeirah 3 and beyond. This project will involve the construction of approximately 42 kilometers of main stormwater drainage lines, further improving the resilience and capacity of the drainage system.
As Dubai continues to grow, these infrastructure projects are essential for maintaining the quality of life for residents and supporting the emirate’s economic ambitions. The Tasreef Programme aligns with the objectives of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy, ensuring that the city is well-prepared for future challenges.
