Bahrain’s Buri irrigation project reaches 87% completion, set for year-end finish

Bahrain’s Buri irrigation project has reached 87% completion, with a projected finish by the end of the year, according to a report from the Bahrain News Agency (BNA). The initiative aims to establish a desalination plant to meet the region’s agricultural water needs, a critical step in enhancing local food security.

The Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak, confirmed the progress during a recent site inspection. He noted that essential components, including irrigation networks, water wells, and two main substations, are already operational. This infrastructure is pivotal for the project’s success, which spans 82,000 square meters and includes 12 plots designated for Bahraini farmers.

Accompanying the minister were Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, Secretary-General of the National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD), and Asim Abdullatif Abdulla, Undersecretary for Agriculture and Animal Affairs. Their presence underscores the collaborative efforts between the ministry and NIAD to bolster local agricultural production.

According to the BNA report, the land for the project was allocated to Bahraini farmers through a public tender, with contracts lasting for ten years, including a one-year grace period. So far, 12 farmers have received their plots and have begun constructing agricultural facilities and greenhouses, with construction progress reported at 75%.

Shaikha Maram emphasized the importance of this initiative in supporting Bahraini farmers and enhancing food security in the region. The project not only aims to improve agricultural output but also to foster sustainable practices within the local farming community.

As the project approaches its completion, stakeholders are optimistic about its potential impact on Bahrain’s agricultural landscape and its role in ensuring a reliable water supply for farming activities.
