Yas Clinic and ADSCC achieve breakthrough in gene therapy for thalassemia patients in UAE

Published:

Yas Clinic, in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center (ADSCC), has made significant strides in treating thalassemia through advanced gene therapy. This breakthrough has enabled a 43-year-old patient, Fahad, to become independent from regular blood transfusions, a critical development for those managing this chronic condition.

Fahad had been living with transfusion-dependent thalassemia, requiring blood transfusions every three to four weeks to maintain stable hemoglobin levels. This ongoing treatment not only posed a logistical burden but also led to complications such as iron overload, necessitating continuous iron chelation therapy that adversely affected his overall health and quality of life.

About a year and a half ago, Fahad was referred to Yas Clinic and ADSCC, which were in the process of introducing advanced gene therapy treatments in the UAE. Gene therapy is considered a groundbreaking advancement in treating inherited blood disorders, particularly for patients lacking suitable bone marrow donors for transplantation.

After thorough medical evaluations and multidisciplinary assessments, Fahad was deemed a suitable candidate for gene therapy. His treatment coincided with national initiatives aimed at making such advanced therapies accessible within the UAE, supported by the Department of Health and the country’s leadership.

The treatment involved collecting Fahad’s own stem cells, which were genetically modified before being reinfused into his body following preparatory therapy. This method, akin to an autologous transplant, targets the root cause of the disease using the patient’s modified cells.

Since undergoing gene therapy last year, Fahad has been closely monitored by a multidisciplinary medical team. He is now transfusion-independent and enjoys improved health, significantly reducing the frequency of hospital visits that had previously dominated his life.

Dr. Maysoon Al Karam, Chief Medical Officer at Yas Clinic, emphasized the transformative nature of gene therapy for inherited blood disorders. “The success of this case marks an important milestone in expanding access to innovative treatment options and reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a regional center for advanced healthcare and medical innovation,” she stated.

Dr. Mohammed Abu Haleeqa, a hematologist at Yas Clinic, noted the profound impact of this treatment on patients’ lives. “For those who have spent most of their lives dependent on regular blood transfusions, reaching a stage where transfusions are no longer required can be truly life-changing,” he remarked. “Seeing patients regain their independence and return to their daily lives with greater confidence is one of the most rewarding outcomes of this therapeutic advancement.”

This achievement not only highlights the potential of gene therapy in the UAE but also reflects the ongoing commitment of Yas Clinic and ADSCC to provide patients with access to the latest innovations in treating inherited blood disorders. For further details, visit Gulf Today.

As the UAE continues to invest in medical innovation, the success of gene therapy for thalassemia patients marks a significant step forward in enhancing patient outcomes and quality of life, ensuring that world-class care is available within the region.
