The UAE’s Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has launched an innovative AI-powered digital platform for Value Added Tax (VAT) refunds aimed at tourists, marking a significant advancement in the efficiency of tax refund processes. This initiative, part of the FTA’s broader strategy to enhance operational efficiency and align with the UAE’s Digital Zero Bureaucracy Program, is now operational at major airports including Abu Dhabi International, Dubai International, and Sharjah International.
The new platform, developed in collaboration with Planet, the authorized operator of the VAT Refund Scheme for Tourists, promises a fully digital and paperless experience for visitors. Tourists can now expect to receive their VAT refunds within one business day, a substantial reduction from the previous average of nine days. Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Mulla, Director General of the FTA, emphasized that this development enhances the tourist experience and reflects the UAE’s commitment to innovation and customer-centric service design.
Streamlined Refund Process
The AI-driven platform simplifies the refund process through a series of user-friendly steps. Tourists begin by downloading the Planet mobile application, where they register by scanning their face and uploading images of their passport and bank card. This registration allows them to access the integrated VAT refund journey.
Upon arriving at the airport, tourists scan a dynamic QR code displayed at designated service points, initiating the refund process through the app. The platform utilizes AI to guide users through the necessary steps, automatically identifying transactions eligible for instant refunds without the need for further inspection.
In cases where verification is required, tourists are directed to smart gates equipped with facial recognition technology, streamlining the identification process and enhancing security. This integration of AI not only expedites the refund process but also ensures compliance with tax regulations.
Enhancing Tourist Satisfaction
According to the FTA, the new platform is expected to significantly boost tourist satisfaction, which already stood at 93 percent in the first nine months of 2026. The authority anticipates processing approximately four million transactions through the digital Tourist Tax Refund Scheme over the next year, with a projected total value of AED692 million.
Since its inception in 2018, the scheme has refunded around AED4.2 billion to tourists, demonstrating its effectiveness and the growing demand for streamlined tax refund services. The FTA’s ongoing enhancements to the platform aim to further improve the quality of service and reduce bureaucratic hurdles, ultimately contributing to a more enjoyable experience for visitors to the UAE.
