Abu Dhabi: The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has announced a groundbreaking achievement in marine conservation with the first-ever recorded nesting of an Olive Ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) in the emirate. This significant event took place on Saadiyat Island and underscores a crucial milestone for marine biodiversity in the region.

The nest was uncovered during a routine monitoring patrol conducted by volunteers from EAD’s Saadiyat Turtle Patrol. While Hawksbill turtles are the predominant nesting species, the nesting of Green and Olive Ridley turtles represents rare but significant occurrences, with Loggerhead turtles being occasional visitors.

According to EAD’s latest aerial survey conducted in 2024, Abu Dhabi’s waters are home to approximately 8,000 marine turtles, with at least 17 confirmed nesting locations on offshore islands. EAD’s broader conservation initiatives, which include rescue, rehabilitation, and satellite tracking research, continue to advance the long-term protection of these populations.
