Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Sponsors Dh8.8 Million Treatment for One-Year-Old Katia’s Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Dubai: His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, has pledged to sponsor the treatment of one-year-old Katia Abu Al-Saud, a Jordanian child diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy. The treatment, valued at approximately Dh8.8 million, will be administered at Al Jalila Children’s Hospital in Dubai, as confirmed by the Government of Dubai Media Office.

A Family’s Journey of Hope

Omar Abu Al-Saud, Katia’s father, expressed profound gratitude for Sheikh Mohammed’s decision, which he described as a beacon of hope after a prolonged period of anxiety and uncertainty. He stated that the support provided by Sheikh Mohammed has given his daughter a renewed chance for treatment. Omar emphasized the importance of community support, acknowledging everyone who helped amplify their plea for assistance.

Noor, Katia’s mother, also conveyed her heartfelt appreciation to Sheikh Mohammed for responding to her urgent appeal. She highlighted the significance of this support, stating that it would forever be cherished by both her and Katia. Noor expressed her gratitude through a message on her Instagram account, thanking Sheikh Mohammed for saving her daughter’s life at a critical moment.

The Need for Urgent Treatment

Katia’s mother had previously shared a video on social media, appealing for intervention to secure treatment for her daughter, whose condition was deemed untreatable in Jordan. Noor explained that the treatment required, costing around $2.4 million (approximately Dh8.8 million), was beyond the family’s financial means. Medical professionals in Jordan had advised that Katia needed specialized care available only in Dubai, prompting Noor to reach out to Sheikh Mohammed for assistance.

The family’s journey to this point has been fraught with challenges, beginning shortly after Katia’s birth. Initially healthy, Katia began to show developmental delays by six months, failing to reach milestones such as sitting or standing. Despite reassurances from their pediatrician, the family’s concerns grew as Katia struggled to support her head by eight months, leading to a referral to a neurologist.

Diagnosis and Treatment Options

Following a series of tests, including MRI scans and genetic analysis, doctors diagnosed Katia with spinal muscular atrophy, a rare condition affecting nerve cells responsible for muscle movement. This disease can lead to progressive muscle weakness if not treated promptly. Medical professionals confirmed that Katia was still in the early stages of the disease, which presents the best opportunity for effective treatment.

The recommended treatment involves a single dose of gene therapy designed to halt disease progression and enable the body to produce the necessary protein to support nerve cells. Unfortunately, this treatment is not available in Jordan, necessitating the family’s search for alternatives.

Noor recounted their relentless pursuit of medical help, consulting numerous doctors and exploring every possible option to save Katia. The urgency of their situation was compounded by the knowledge that each passing day without treatment could result in further loss of muscle strength.

A New Beginning

The announcement of Sheikh Mohammed’s sponsorship marked a significant turning point for the family, transforming their months of anxiety into a renewed sense of hope. Noor articulated her deepest wish throughout this ordeal: to see her daughter receive treatment before the disease could rob her of her mobility. Sheikh Mohammed’s timely intervention has fulfilled this aspiration, offering Katia a new lease on life.

Omar Abu Al-Saud reiterated the family’s gratitude, stating that words alone cannot convey the depth of their appreciation for this humanitarian gesture. The family’s journey, once marked by uncertainty, is now poised to enter a hopeful new chapter.
