Israel Faces Stiff Hezbollah Resistance Amid Intensified Ground Clashes in Southern Lebanon
Israel and Hezbollah are currently engaged in fierce ground confrontations across multiple strategic locations in southern Lebanon. This escalation follows Israel’s ongoing ground invasion, as reported by local security sources and residents from the affected areas.
Intense Fighting in Khiam
The majority of the clashes are centered around the critical hilltop city of Khiam. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have launched an extensive air and artillery campaign targeting Hezbollah fighters entrenched in the city. Fighting intensified after several days of skirmishes, with a Hezbollah spokesperson confirming increased hostilities on the eastern and northern peripheries of Khiam.
As the conflict raged in Khiam, Israeli troops made attempts to advance into border towns in both the central and western regions of southern Lebanon. A resident from the Aita al-Chaab border village reported intense fighting between Israeli soldiers and Hezbollah forces.
Heavy Resistance Along the Border
A Lebanese security source indicated that Aita al-Chaab was among several border towns experiencing heavy combat as Israel sought to penetrate southern Lebanon at various points along the shared border. Resistance from Hezbollah fighters has been significant.
This surge in fighting coincided with Israel amassing troops along the border, deploying four brigades and columns of tanks in preparation for an expanded ground operation. The Israeli military characterized its actions as a “limited ground operation,” while discussions regarding the campaign’s expansion were ongoing among political leaders.
The conflict was ignited when Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel on March 2. In response, Israel initiated a military operation aimed at the complete dismantling of Hezbollah. The group has framed the conflict as a struggle for Lebanon’s survival, asserting that it is defending the nation against frequent Israeli airstrikes that have persisted since the November 2024 ceasefire.
Strategic Importance of Khiam
The ongoing hostilities represent a contest between Israel’s aerial capabilities and Hezbollah’s guerrilla tactics. Experts have noted that the ground fighting in Lebanon is now focused on strategic locations, particularly Khiam, which could significantly influence Hezbollah’s ability to resist Israel’s advances.
Khiam’s elevated position overlooks the Hula Valley and key routes leading west toward the Israeli border. Control of this area would disrupt Hezbollah’s supply lines to its fighters in southern Lebanon, effectively dividing the central and eastern sectors south of the Litani River and impeding connectivity with the Bekaa Valley.
The Israeli military has targeted civilian infrastructure in southern Lebanon to further sever supply routes, striking bridges over the Litani River and major roads leading south. Rights groups have condemned these attacks, which also include strikes on medical facilities and emergency responders, aimed at deteriorating living conditions in the region.
Hezbollah’s Resilience
Despite ongoing military pressure, Hezbollah has maintained a strong presence in southern Lebanon. The group’s ability to withstand over a year of efforts by the Lebanese army to disarm them, coupled with near-daily Israeli strikes on their fighters and weapon caches, raises questions about their resilience. Hezbollah has effectively utilized a combination of anti-tank guided munitions, drones, and artillery in its defense.
For residents of southern Lebanon, the debate surrounding disarmament appears largely theoretical. Hezbollah remains active, albeit discreetly, with many villagers identifying as members of the group. In light of Israel’s invasion, numerous residents have begun to take up arms.
Imad Salameh, the mayor of Khiam, stated that every town in the south has at least a few hundred fighters equipped with anti-tank missiles, indicating that Israel’s military operations will not be straightforward.
Israeli Military Strategy
As clashes continue in Khiam, the IDF is reportedly leveraging the hilltops it occupies to bombard the Lebanese side while attempting to encircle Hezbollah fighters. Israel is also establishing “safe zones” along the Lebanese border, where residents are expected to self-police to prevent Hezbollah infiltration.
A resident of Kafr Shouba recounted an incident where Israeli forces raided his home and others nearby, searching for weapons and taking one resident for interrogation.
The immediate objective of the Israeli campaign, as outlined by former IDF officers, is to create a buffer zone in southern Lebanon to push Hezbollah further from the border. While official goals remain ambiguous, military actions suggest a dual approach: occupying territory south of the Litani River and establishing a surveillance-heavy zone to its north.
Miri Eisin, a former senior officer in the IDF combat intelligence corps, explained that the buffer zone aims to protect northern Israeli communities from the threat of anti-tank missiles and guided missiles.
If Israel successfully pushes Hezbollah back from the Litani River, it will likely shift focus to the group’s presence north of the river, where most of its rockets and drones are launched toward Israel.
Long-Term Implications
Israeli military analysts have cautioned that establishing a buffer zone in southern Lebanon would necessitate a prolonged occupation, potentially rekindling popular support for Hezbollah. Currently, the group faces domestic isolation and pressure following its involvement in the renewed conflict with Israel.
Prof. Yagil Levy, head of the Open University Institute for the Study of Civil-Military Relations in Israel, remarked that the current situation resembles a renewed occupation of parts of southern Lebanon. He noted that this time, Israel is seizing territory and displacing the population, thereby ensuring greater operational freedom and reducing the risk of guerrilla activities from local villages.
