Dubai Launches World Self-Driving Transport Exhibition

A Vision for the Future

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, recently inaugurated the Dubai World Self-Driving Transport Exhibition. This significant event, organized by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), was attended by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai. The exhibition underscores Dubai’s commitment to becoming a global leader in innovative transportation solutions.

During the opening remarks, Sheikh Hamdan emphasized Dubai’s ambition to enhance its status as a hub for future-driven technologies. He stated, “Guided by the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, we are working to make Dubai the world’s most future-ready city.” This initiative aligns with the broader goal of creating an environment that fosters innovation and improves the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

The Self-Driving Transport Strategy

The Self-Driving Transport Strategy is a cornerstone of Dubai’s Economic Agenda D33, which aims to double the emirate’s economy and solidify its leadership across various sectors. Sheikh Hamdan highlighted the importance of an integrated approach that focuses on research and development, attracting investments, and embracing cutting-edge technologies. This strategy is particularly relevant in the realms of artificial intelligence and the digital economy, ensuring that Dubai remains at the forefront of global advancements.

“Our goal is to present the world with a model for autonomous mobility,” he added, reinforcing Dubai’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Exhibition Highlights

The exhibition features 55 exhibitors from leading companies showcasing groundbreaking innovations in self-driving vehicles, robotics, and smart mobility solutions. Notably, TENSOR introduced its self-driving vehicles for the first time in the region, while XPENG, a Chinese company, displayed its autonomous aircraft. Additionally, the event included vehicles from five consortia participating in the Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport.

This exhibition is part of the larger Dubai World Congress and Challenge for Self-Driving Transport, attracting over 3,000 attendees from around the globe. The event also features more than 80 speakers, including senior officials, researchers, and experts in advanced self-driving technologies.

Updates on Self-Driving Taxi Services

During the event, attendees received updates on the upcoming self-driving taxi service. Three leading global companies—Baidu Apollo Go, WeRide, and Pony.ai—have initiated pilot operations with over 60 self-driving vehicles in the Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim areas. The commercial launch of this service, which will operate without a driver, is scheduled for 2026.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority, provided insights into the unified visual identity that will be applied to all self-driving vehicles in Dubai, branded as ‘Dubai Future Ride’. This initiative aims to enhance the passenger experience through interactive entertainment screens powered by artificial intelligence.

Future Goals for Autonomous Transport

The Dubai Self-Driving Transport Strategy, set to span from 2025 to 2040, aims to increase the proportion of trips made via autonomous transport. Currently, 20.4% of trips are made using self-driving vehicles, with a target of raising this figure to 25% by 2030 and 36% by 2040. This ambitious plan reflects Dubai’s commitment to integrating advanced technologies into everyday life, making the city a living laboratory for future innovations.

As Dubai continues to pave the way for autonomous mobility, the exhibition serves as a testament to the emirate’s dedication to embracing the future of transportation.
