Discovering Dubai: A Family Trip Full of Surprises

For our recent spring break, my family and I shifted gears from our usual Disney getaways and beach trips, opting instead for an adventure in Dubai. We spent eight nights in this vibrant, fast-paced city in the United Arab Emirates! The cultural differences between Dubai and our home in the United States provided us with invaluable insights into respect and understanding across diverse lifestyles.

Affordable Luxury: Dubai’s Surprising Costs

While our flights to Dubai weren’t the cheapest, upon arriving, I found the overall experience much more economical than I had anticipated. Known for its luxury and extravagant lifestyle, Dubai surprised me with its affordability.

For instance, we booked a five-star hotel for under $225 a night. This beautiful establishment was conveniently located within walking distance of the metro and just 15 minutes from the airport. Additionally, these rates typically included breakfast, which eased our budget concerns.

Along with our lodging, many of our daily activities were either free or quite budget-friendly. Exploring the bustling spice markets and gold souks offered a colorful and vibrant experience, all while being easy on the wallet. One of our standout memories was witnessing the Burj Khalifa illuminated at night—an enchanting fountain show set to music, all at no charge. Imagine something grander than the Bellagio fountains in Las Vegas, but with the world’s tallest building as a backdrop.

We also made good use of an all-inclusive activities pass, allowing us to take part in countless adventures at a fraction of the retail price. For just a few hundred dollars per person, we enjoyed camel rides in the desert, skiing in a shopping mall, and a visit to the Museum of the Future. All in all, our upscale trip cost less than many of our typical vacations in the U.S.

Navigating Gender Dynamics as an American Woman

As an American woman, I encountered some unanticipated differences in treatment compared to my male family members. The cultural landscape surrounding gender roles and perceptions in Dubai was strikingly different from what I was used to in the United States.

Throughout our trip, I noticed that staff often directed their attention to my husband and sons while overlooking me during conversations. For example, during a city tour, our guide seemingly focused solely on my husband, even accepting his tip at the end instead of acknowledging me. Likewise, when checking out of our hotel, the front-desk manager assumed my husband would handle the payment, despite my reservation being made under my name.

Dress codes also varied significantly. At the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, my family could enter in standard tourist attire while I needed to cover my hair, wrists, and ankles. I found myself purchasing headscarves and a conservative outfit to adhere to local customs. In tourist-heavy areas, I felt freer in my clothing choices, but I made an effort to maintain a level of modesty in more traditional settings.

Weather Surprises: Be Prepared for Rain

To our surprise, we also encountered unexpected rain during our stay. Dubai has a unique cloud seeding program that helps manage water supply challenges. This means that at times, rain can occur even when not forecasted. In hindsight, I wish I had packed a light poncho or umbrella; next time, I’ll be prepared for these rare yet possible weather changes.

Planning for Local Holidays: Understanding Ramadan

We visited Dubai during Ramadan, a significant month of fasting and communal reflection in the Islamic calendar. This was an oversight on my part, as I hadn’t realized our trip would coincide with such an important time.

While many attractions remained open, the operating hours changed, and daily prayers influenced some activities. Our tour guide advised us to respect local customs by refraining from eating or drinking in public spaces during daylight hours. Although this didn’t greatly impede our experience, being informed ahead of time would have allowed for a smoother adjustment.

Dubai was an incredible destination filled with rich culture and experiences, and despite some unexpected moments, I would eagerly return. With these insights in mind, I would be better prepared for our next adventure in this remarkable city.
