Abu Dhabi partners with The Boring Company to explore underground transport solutions

Published:

Abu Dhabi is set to enhance its urban infrastructure through a new partnership with The Boring Company, founded by Elon Musk. The Abu Dhabi Projects and Infrastructure Centre (ADPIC) has signed an agreement to explore the feasibility of underground transport systems and utility tunnels across the emirate, aiming to improve connectivity and support sustainable urban development.

The agreement, formalized at the LIVEX 2026 event, will see ADPIC collaborate with The Boring Company to assess advanced tunnelling solutions that could bolster infrastructure reliability. This initiative is not just about adopting new technologies; it focuses on optimizing urban space to accommodate future growth and create lasting value for communities and businesses.

Exploring Advanced Tunnelling Solutions

Under this partnership, both organizations will exchange expertise in various areas, including tunnel planning, construction methods, safety standards, and digital engineering. The collaboration aims to incorporate international best practices in project feasibility and delivery, while also fostering local expertise in advanced tunnelling and underground infrastructure.

ADPIC’s Director General, Engineer Maysarah Mahmoud Salim Eid, and The Boring Company’s President, Steve Davis, signed the agreement in the presence of Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of the Department of Municipalities and Transport. This partnership aligns with Abu Dhabi’s ambitions to position itself as a regional hub for innovative infrastructure solutions.

Strategic Importance for Abu Dhabi

Officials emphasize that the focus of this initiative extends beyond technology adoption; it aims to find practical applications that enhance urban living. The Boring Company recognizes Abu Dhabi’s growth potential and commitment to advanced technologies, viewing this partnership as an opportunity to explore next-generation underground infrastructure for transport and utilities.

ADPIC currently manages an extensive infrastructure portfolio valued at over $56 billion, having supported the delivery of 100 capital projects in 2025 alone. This collaboration with The Boring Company is expected to further enhance the emirate’s infrastructure capabilities, ensuring that Abu Dhabi remains at the forefront of urban development.
