Apple Rolls Out AI-Powered Siri Amid Pressure to Compete with Rivals
Cupertino, California: On Monday, Apple introduced significant enhancements to its Siri voice assistant, including improved voice recognition and the launch of a standalone app. This update marks a long-awaited transformation that the company has been working on for the past two years.
The revamped Siri, now referred to as “Siri AI,” was announced during Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference held at its headquarters in Cupertino. This new iteration is designed to analyze content displayed on users’ screens and possesses what Apple describes as “broad world knowledge,” enabling it to access additional information from the web.
Users will now have the ability to revisit previous conversations with Siri. The assistant can also retrieve information, such as a friend’s address shared in a message, even if that data was not explicitly saved.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s software chief, emphasized that “truly helpful AI must be centered around you and your needs.” He elaborated that this involves integrating AI deeply into everyday products, ensuring it is grounded in personal context and designed with privacy in mind. This approach reflects Apple’s vision for what it terms “Apple Intelligence.”
Apple’s Lagging Position in AI Race
The overhaul of Siri has been a focal point of this year’s developer conference. Apple’s initial commitment to revamp Siri by 2024 faced multiple delays, contributing to its current lag in the competitive AI landscape. The company is striving to catch up with rivals like Microsoft and Alphabet’s Google, which have rapidly integrated “agentic” AI—software capable of performing complex tasks—into their products.
With the rise of AI chatbots such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google’s Gemini, Apple’s Siri, which was the first mainstream voice assistant launched in 2011, has struggled to maintain its relevance.
Apple’s new Siri AI features a more expressive and conversational voice experience. The assistant will also be available on iPads, with ongoing efforts to adapt it for Apple smartwatches. However, Siri AI will not be available initially in the European Union on iPhones or iPads, nor will it be accessible in China due to regulatory challenges.
The new Siri AI will save images and searches to a dedicated app that syncs across iPhones, iPads, and Macs, utilizing Apple’s private cloud technology. The upgraded assistant will initially support the English language, with plans to add other languages “quickly,” although a specific timeline has not been provided.
Apple’s upcoming iOS 27 operating system will be compatible with iPhone 11 models and will feature a new version of macOS named “Golden Gate.”
New Child Safety Updates
In addition to AI enhancements, Apple announced updates to its child safety features. The new parental controls will restrict children to accessing only those apps approved by their parents. A new “ask to browse” feature will require children to request permission for each new website they wish to visit.
Apple is also introducing features to automatically blur graphic images in messaging apps and notify parents, expanding on existing tools that addressed nudity. Furthermore, the company is collaborating with the American Academy of Pediatrics to develop a guide aimed at helping parents foster healthy digital habits for their children.
Apple’s AI Challenge
Historically, Apple has maintained strict control over its software and user data, adopting a cautious stance towards AI. This strategy has included partnerships, such as those with Google’s Gemini models, to enhance its capabilities. This cautious approach contrasts with competitors who are betting on AI agents that could potentially replace traditional applications and redefine user interactions with devices. Companies like Microsoft have hinted at a future where AI “agents” could supplant conventional operating systems and applications, while Nvidia is collaborating with PC manufacturers to create laptops that directly compete with Apple’s high-end MacBooks.
Federighi remarked on the transformative potential of AI, stating that it could profoundly shape society and provide meaningful benefits when approached responsibly. He cautioned against a race to advance AI without considering the implications for users.
Apple’s Spending Pivot
Apple’s deliberate pace has allowed it to avoid the extensive investments in data centers that competitors have made. However, the company may be shifting its strategy, as financial chief Kevan Parekh indicated during a recent earnings call that Apple would discontinue its long-standing practice of returning excess cash to shareholders, suggesting a willingness to invest more heavily in new initiatives.
In pursuing AI, Apple benefits from powerful chips embedded in many of its devices, enabling the execution of AI agents without additional costs to consumers, who have already paid for the necessary computing power. The company also possesses a vast amount of personal data stored on iPhones, which could be leveraged to enhance its AI capabilities.
