Emirates Unveils First-Ever Retrofit of Two-Class A380, Introducing Premium Economy Seating

Emirates has marked a significant milestone in its extensive retrofit programme with the successful reconfiguration of its inaugural two-class Airbus A380 aircraft. The newly refurbished aircraft, designated A6-EUX, commenced operations on the EK 39/40 route between Dubai and Birmingham. This aircraft now showcases Emirates’ latest offerings across three cabin classes, including 76 Business Class seats, 56 Premium Economy seats, and 437 Economy Class seats.

This refurbishment is the first of 15 two-class A380 aircraft that Emirates plans to renovate, reinforcing the airline’s commitment to delivering a consistently superior travel experience.

Fleet First for Premium Economy

For the first time, Emirates has introduced a Premium Economy cabin on the upper deck of the A380. This cabin features spacious leather seats arranged in a 2-3-2 configuration, providing generous recline and enhanced comfort. Passengers can enjoy full leg and footrests, six-way adjustable headrests, built-in charging ports, and side cocktail tables. Additionally, the Premium Economy experience includes elevated dining options and an advanced entertainment system accessed via a 13.3-inch personal screen.

Refreshed Interiors Across All Cabins

The retrofitted A380 boasts upgraded interiors throughout all cabins, incorporating the latest generation of seats and modern cabin finishes. Emirates has implemented a cohesive design aesthetic that includes fresh carpets, ceiling panels, and signature elements such as contemporary color palettes and specially designed Ghaf tree motifs, complemented by premium wood finishes.

Retrofitting the First Two-Class A380

The retrofit process for A6-EUX involved a comprehensive overhaul of the entire cabin interior. The Emirates Engineering team executed extensive modifications to the upper deck, which included the removal of 120 Economy Class seats to accommodate the new Premium Economy and additional Business Class seats.

Approximately 50 engineers and technicians dedicated around 35,000 man-hours to this project, utilizing over 2,500 different types of parts. The entire retrofit was completed within two months, encompassing thorough planning and testing. Future retrofits of other two-class A380 aircraft are anticipated to take around 30 days, thanks to the insights gained from this initial project. By the end of 2026, all 15 two-class A380 aircraft in Emirates’ fleet are expected to be retrofitted.

Evolution of the Emirates Retrofit Programme

Launched in 2021, the Emirates retrofit programme aims to uphold the airline’s high standards of customer service across its global operations. Initially, 120 aircraft were scheduled for refurbishment in the first phase. However, by May 2024, due to the programme’s success and positive customer feedback, the scope expanded to 191 aircraft, and later to 219. A dedicated team of approximately 270 staff ensures that an average of two refreshed aircraft are completed each month at the Emirates Engineering hangars in Dubai.

Consuming Responsibly

In alignment with its commitment to reducing its environmental impact, Emirates evaluates materials retrieved from the 219 A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft undergoing retrofitting for potential repurposing. This initiative has led to the creation of the “Aircrafted” range, which includes limited-edition collector items and “Aircrafted for Kids” backpacks made from repurposed Economy Class seat fabric. To date, around 4,000 of these backpacks have been donated to children in ten countries.
