I Rejected a Top Salary to Return to Dubai: Bosnian Cyclist Almir Mujic on Why the UAE is His True Home

Dubai: Almir Mujic, a Bosnian expatriate who has lived in the UAE for 18 years, views the country’s rugged landscape as more than just a recreational area; it represents a personal commitment to environmental stewardship. His dedication to preserving Dubai’s natural heritage has garnered recognition from the Dubai Civility Committee, highlighting his ongoing efforts to maintain the emirate’s ecological balance.

Mujic is frequently seen clearing litter from cycling trails and utilizing social media to advocate for local wildlife. His efforts have made him a prominent figure in community stewardship. A notable moment in his advocacy occurred when he shared a video of an injured gazelle he encountered during a ride. This post prompted a swift rescue operation by Dubai Municipality, which had the animal receiving care within hours. Mujic expressed his surprise at the municipality’s proactive response, stating that they reached out to him before he could even make a call.

After providing location details, Mujic received timely updates, confirming that the gazelle was located and being treated. His actions caught the attention of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who personally thanked Mujic for his intervention.

For Mujic, who left a lucrative career in Europe, this recognition reaffirmed his belief that home is not merely a geographical location but a place one feels compelled to protect. He has come to understand that in Dubai, true luxury lies in the efficiency of public services, the safety of neighborhoods, and the serene beauty of desert trails at dawn.

Why He Came to Dubai

Mujic often finds himself most alive amidst the bikes, trees, and winding trails of Dubai. Whether cycling at the Al Qudra track, which he describes as the most beautiful in the world, or at Mushrif Park, where he works as a sales manager, cycling has transformed from a passion into a full-time career.

His journey in the UAE began in 2008, driven by a quest for opportunity during a time of limited prospects in Bosnia. Mujic’s first role in Dubai was as a security officer in Dubai Media City. Over the years, he advanced to facility manager, overseeing building operations, and later transitioned into the solar energy sector. He also coached chess to supplement his income before fully committing to cycling in 2015.

Mujic expressed a desire to continue cycling for as long as possible, emphasizing its importance in his life.

World-Class Facilities at No Cost

When asked what makes Dubai special, Mujic highlights Mushrif Park, which features family cycling tracks, children’s skill zones, and public facilities that are accessible to all. He notes the variety of trails available, from beginner paths for children to technical routes for seasoned riders, all set against a backdrop of unexpected wildlife encounters.

Mujic remarked on the park’s magic, stating that the quietness of cycling often leads to surprising wildlife sightings, such as gazelles and foxes. He believes that the availability of premium experiences at no cost is one of Dubai’s greatest luxuries. The public facilities are of high quality and are not overcrowded, allowing families to enjoy them fully.

He pointed out that during weekends, especially in the current season, Mushrif Park is often filled with children, which brings him joy. Mujic emphasized that these facilities are designed for the benefit of both citizens and residents, and it is essential to utilize them.

Despite receiving a lucrative job offer from a renowned cycling destination in Switzerland, which included a high salary and management role, Mujic declined the opportunity. He spent three months there but ultimately returned to Dubai, realizing that the lifestyle he desired for his family could not be replicated elsewhere.

Peace of Mind

Living in Dubai with his wife and 10-year-old son, Mujic believes the city provides an ideal environment for raising a family. He articulated the fundamental desires of a father and husband: safety, security, and a fulfilling lifestyle. He appreciates that Dubai is a modern metropolis while still upholding traditional values.

Mujic’s love for Dubai is accompanied by a strong sense of civic pride. As an advocate for responsible cycling, he frequently shares videos encouraging fellow cyclists to maintain the cleanliness of the city’s world-class facilities. He views participation in community efforts not as an obligation but as a privilege.

Unparalleled Efficiency

Mujic’s commitment to community service is further fueled by the responsiveness he has experienced from both residents and government authorities. While cycling from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, he encountered a police officer using a drone to inspect the track for necessary repairs. After mentioning two bumps on the road that had caused an injury to a friend, Mujic was astonished to see a worker addressing the issue later that day.

He noted that in many parts of the world, reporting an issue can lead to prolonged delays, but in Dubai, decisions are made swiftly. Within hours of reporting, actions are taken, showcasing the city’s commitment to efficiency.

Home, Redefined

While Mujic retains affection for Bosnia and misses his parents, he acknowledges that it is Dubai he misses the most when he travels. He recounted a conversation with a friend who suggested that the UAE could not be his home because his grandfather did not live there. Mujic countered that the UAE is his home because he envisions a future for his grandchildren there.

He articulated that once one experiences a certain standard of living, efficiency, and safety, it becomes the norm, making it difficult to return to a different way of life.
