Haj 2023: Essential Vaccination Requirements for UAE Pilgrims Revealed

As millions of Muslims prepare to embark on the sacred journey to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, for Haj in just a month, authorities in the UAE and Saudi Arabia have outlined crucial health requirements for pilgrims. With preparations underway, it is imperative for UAE residents to secure the necessary vaccinations as recommended by the Nusuk Haj platform, the official digital initiative of the Saudi Ministry of Haj and Umrah.

Health Requirements for Haj Travellers from the UAE

The General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, and Zakat in the UAE has specified several health mandates for those planning to undertake the Haj pilgrimage. Pilgrims must submit a declaration confirming their fitness to perform the rituals, free from any diseases that could impede their physical capacity.

The list of disqualifying conditions includes organ failure, neurological or psychological disorders affecting cognition, advanced dementia, late-stage pregnancy, and active infectious diseases such as pulmonary tuberculosis, hemorrhagic fevers, or cancers undergoing chemotherapy.

In addition to health declarations, specific vaccinations are either mandatory or recommended. Pilgrims are advised to document their vaccination history in an international vaccination card issued by authorized health centers.

Required and Recommended Vaccinations for Haj Pilgrims

For those traveling to Saudi Arabia from abroad, the country mandates vaccinations against several diseases:

Meningococcal Disease (Neisseria meningitis)

The meningococcal quadrivalent vaccine is compulsory for Haj pilgrims, providing protection against four strains of meningococcal disease (A, C, W, and Y). This serious bacterial infection can lead to inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

  • Requirement: A certificate of vaccination with the quadrivalent (ACYW135) vaccine is necessary.
  • Timing: The certificate must be issued at least 10 days prior to entering Saudi Arabia.
  • Types Accepted:
    • Quadruple (ACYW) polysaccharide vaccine, valid for three years.
    • Quadruple conjugate (ACYW) vaccine, valid for five years.
  • Dosage: One dose is required for adults and children over two years old.

Polio

Polio, caused by the poliovirus, primarily affects children under five years old.

  • Requirement: Travelers from regions where polio is still prevalent must present a valid vaccination certificate for either the bivalent oral polio vaccine (BOPV) or inactivated polio vaccine (IPV).
  • Timing: The vaccine should be administered between four weeks and 12 months before entering Saudi Arabia.

Yellow Fever

This mosquito-borne viral illness is common in parts of Africa and South America, particularly during the monsoon season.

  • Requirement: All adults and children over nine months from endemic regions must show a valid vaccination certificate.
  • Timing: The vaccine should be given at least 10 days before entering Saudi Arabia and remains valid for life.

Seasonal Influenza

The seasonal influenza vaccine is recommended by the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) for vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, children under five, the elderly, and individuals with underlying health conditions.

  • Timing: This vaccine should also be administered at least 10 days prior to travel.

When Should Vaccinations Be Administered?

According to Dubai Health, individuals planning to perform Haj should receive the necessary vaccinations at least 14 days before their departure to build immunity against infectious diseases. Certain vaccines, such as the meningococcal vaccine, must be taken no less than 10 days before entering Saudi Arabia.

Cost and Availability of Vaccinations

Vaccines are accessible at both public and private clinics and health centers throughout the UAE. The cost of Haj vaccination packages generally ranges from Dh325 to Dh790, covering both mandatory vaccinations like the meningococcal ACYW135 and recommended vaccines such as influenza.

General Health Tips Before Traveling for Haj

The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention has issued a guide titled ‘Healthy Haj’, aimed at helping residents avoid health issues related to heat and stress during the pilgrimage. The guide emphasizes the importance of preparing for the expected large crowds and high temperatures in late May.

Key preventative measures include:

  • Consulting a doctor before travel to ensure good health.
  • Bringing an adequate supply of prescribed medications.
  • Including a detailed medical report listing health conditions and medications.
  • Receiving all required vaccinations at least 14 days before travel.
  • Maintaining physical fitness at least three weeks prior to the trip.
  • Following a healthy diet to boost the immune system.
  • Packing a medical kit with essentials such as hand sanitizers, wound disinfectants, masks, and pain relievers.
  • Carrying a reusable, insulated water bottle and a light-colored umbrella for UV protection.
  • Remembering to bring a personal hygiene kit with necessary items.
