Dubai Traffic 2023: New RTA Infrastructure Cuts Commute Times by Up to 80%
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled significant infrastructure enhancements aimed at reducing travel times across the city. Recent projects, including new bridges and expanded lanes, promise to cut commute durations by as much as 80%. These developments are expected to transform the daily travel experience for residents and visitors alike.
Upgrades to Ras Al Khor Road and Al Khail Road
On July 28, the RTA announced the completion of several rapid traffic solutions on Ras Al Khor Road and Al Khail Road. Key upgrades include the addition of new lanes, particularly one on Al Khail Road heading towards Abu Dhabi, which increases the road’s capacity by 33%. This modification is projected to reduce travel times by 20% during peak hours.
The RTA has also enhanced critical entry and exit points to alleviate congestion and improve traffic flow. Notably, drivers can now exit from Financial Centre Road towards Meydan and enter from Ras Al Khor Road to Financial Centre Road. These enhancements are anticipated to shorten journey times by up to three minutes and improve overall traffic flow by 20%.
Three-Lane Bridge at Oud Metha and Al Asayel Street
On July 26, the RTA inaugurated a new three-lane bridge as part of the Oud Metha and Al Asayel Streets Development Project. This project is nearing completion, with two tunnels set to open in August and a bridge for left-turn movements also in the final stages.
The newly opened bridge can accommodate 3,600 vehicles per hour, facilitating traffic from Al Khail Road towards Al Asayel Street via Al Wasl Club Street. The overall development includes four major intersections, two tunnels totaling 4,300 meters, and roads extending 14 kilometers. Once fully operational, the RTA expects the capacity of Oud Metha Street to increase by 50%, allowing for 15,600 vehicles per hour in both directions. Travel times are projected to decrease from 20 minutes to just 5 minutes.
New Bridge at Dubai Harbour
In a further advancement, the RTA inaugurated a new bridge in the Dubai Harbour area on July 19. This 1.5-kilometer bridge, constructed in collaboration with Shamal Holding, features two lanes in each direction and can accommodate 6,000 vehicles per hour. It provides direct access to Dubai Harbour from Sheikh Zayed Road, significantly enhancing connectivity for commuters traveling from Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
According to the RTA, travel times in this area have been reduced from 12 minutes to a mere 3 minutes. The bridge extends from Interchange 5 on Sheikh Zayed Road, near the American University in Dubai, traversing Al Naseem Street and Al Falak Street, and crossing King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street before connecting to Dubai Harbour Street.
Hessa Street Development Project
The RTA officially completed the Hessa Street Development Project on April 19, which aimed to alleviate congestion in a vital traffic corridor. This project involved a 4.5-kilometer extension between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, widening the street and its intersections to four lanes in each direction.
The RTA estimates that travel times in this area have decreased from 15 minutes to just 4 minutes, with road capacity doubling from 8,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. Phase 2 of the project is currently underway, which will extend Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road over a 3-kilometer stretch. This phase will include the construction of bridges extending 8,835 meters, a 480-meter tunnel, and a 525-meter, two-lane braided ramp to eliminate traffic overlap between Al Khail Road and Al Khamila Street. The goal is to further reduce travel time from 24 minutes to 5 minutes.
Bridge Linking Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Street
On February 27, the RTA launched a vital second-level bridge as part of the World Trade Centre Roundabout Development Project. This 1,000-meter bridge, comprising two lanes, is designed to manage 3,000 vehicles per hour, facilitating traffic from Sheikh Zayed Road to Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Street, heading towards Al Karama and Deira.
This new infrastructure is expected to significantly reduce journey times from six minutes to just one minute, thereby alleviating congestion at the World Trade Centre Roundabout.
These infrastructure projects reflect the RTA’s commitment to enhancing the efficiency of Dubai’s transportation network, ultimately improving the quality of life for its residents and visitors.
