Dubai’s Dh3 Billion Beaches Development Plan Boosts Capacity by 170% with New Attractions and Women-Only Beach

Dubai is set to enhance its coastline significantly with the newly approved Dh3 billion Dubai Beaches Development plan. Announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the initiative aims to expand beach capacity for tourists and visitors by 170%. This ambitious project is expected to increase the total length of Dubai’s beaches by 400% and introduce a variety of leisure, tourism, and lifestyle destinations.

Currently, Dubai boasts eight public beaches, all of which have received the prestigious Blue Flag accreditation for meeting high standards in marine water quality, environmental education, and public safety. The development plan aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which envisions transforming the city into the world’s best place to live by 2040. It also supports the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033, focusing on expanding public spaces and promoting healthier lifestyles.

Overview of the Dubai Beaches Development Plan

The Dubai Beaches Development plan will see significant upgrades to some of the emirate’s most popular beaches, managed by Dubai Municipality. The plan includes phased projects scheduled for completion by 2030, with Jumeirah Beach 1 already reopened to the public after renovations.

1. Al Mamzar Beach: Corniche, Beach Park, and Lagoon

The flagship project at Al Mamzar Beach, with an investment of Dh500 million, aims to create a premier family destination. Spanning 4 million square feet, the beach will accommodate up to 7 million visitors annually, representing a 500% increase in service capacity. The project prioritizes sustainability and climate resilience, with engineering teams enhancing coastal protection based on specialized environmental studies.

As of April 7, the development of Al Mamzar Corniche is reported to be 88% complete. Key features include:

  • Smart Facilities: Al Mamzar Beach will feature 35 service and leisure facilities designed to international standards, including accessibility options for people of determination.
  • Leisure Centers: The plan includes green spaces, a skateboarding area, a waterfront restaurant, and dedicated zones for water sports.
  • Active Zones: Over 5.5 km of walking, running, and cycling tracks will connect various areas, catering to both casual visitors and athletes.
  • Women-Only Beach: This will be the world’s first 24-hour women-only beach, offering a secure environment for night swimming.

2. Jebel Ali Beach

Jebel Ali Beach is set to become a unique tourist destination that emphasizes environmental preservation. Covering 330 hectares and extending 6.6 km, the beach will feature both sandy and mangrove areas developed by Nakheel and Dubai Municipality, respectively.

Key features include:

  • Amenities: The beach will offer integrated infrastructure, including a two-lane road and ample parking for vehicles and bicycles.
  • The Pearl: This area will serve as a hub for recreational activities, featuring a family beach, sports facilities, and various dining options.
  • The Sanctuary: An eco-tourism area where visitors can observe turtles in their natural habitat, prioritizing environmental conservation.
  • The Nest: This section will include an environmental center focused on biodiversity and turtle rehabilitation.

3. Umm Suqeim 1 and 2

Umm Suqeim Beach is undergoing a Dh500 million transformation to become a global tourist hub with a distinctive Emirati character. The beach will expand by 30%, accommodating up to 6 million visitors annually.

Key features include:

  • Facilities: New transport connections and convenience features will enhance visitor experience, including 2,400 parking spaces.
  • Beachfront Development: Smart lighting systems will allow for night swimming, making the beach accessible all day.
  • Observation Tower: A 38-meter tall observation tower inspired by maritime heritage will serve as a visual landmark.

4. Jumeirah Beach 1

Jumeirah Beach 1 has recently undergone a major transformation, expanding by 50% and reopening to the public in February. The beach now features improved walking and cycling tracks, outdoor gyms, and enhanced smart services, including AI-led rescue systems.

The development plan for Dubai’s beaches not only aims to enhance recreational opportunities but also aligns with broader sustainability goals. The initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy to establish Dubai as one of the world’s most sustainable coastal cities.
