WeRide Accelerates Autonomous Mobility with Major Robotaxi Expansion in Dubai

WeRide (Nasdaq: WRD), a pioneering global leader in autonomous driving technology, has taken a significant leap forward in its expansion strategy with the recent acquisition of a self-driving vehicle trial permit from Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). This license will enable WeRide to conduct comprehensive Robotaxi trials across the city’s bustling streets, marking a milestone in the evolution of smart, autonomous urban transportation in the Middle East.

The issuance of this trial permit represents not just regulatory approval but a crucial endorsement of WeRide’s cutting-edge technology and operational capabilities. Dubai, known for its forward-thinking infrastructure and embrace of futuristic mobility solutions, becomes the 11th city worldwide—and the second in the UAE—to feature WeRide’s autonomous Robotaxi services. This new chapter positions Dubai as a vibrant hub for innovation and smart city initiatives in autonomous transport.

WeRide’s initial Robotaxi GXR fleet will consist of 50 vehicles, strategically deployed in key regions including Jumeirah’s key commercial districts and prime residential communities such as Za’abeel First, Al Manara, Umm Suqeim, and Al Safa. The company plans a phased rollout, with services expanding in the near future to cover crucial hubs like Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai International Airport, and downtown areas. More ambitiously, WeRide aims to expand its Middle East fleet to 1,000 Robotaxis and deploy tens of thousands of vehicles by 2030, cementing its commitment to scalable, mass-market autonomous transportation solutions.

The company’s ambitious plans for Dubai do not stop at fleet expansion. By the end of 2025, WeRide intends to begin trials in partnership with Uber, featuring an onboard safety officer to ensure a secure and seamless passenger experience. The goal is to transition to fully driverless commercial operations by 2026, reflecting WeRide’s confidence in the maturity and reliability of its autonomous driving platform.

At the 2025 Dubai World Congress for Self-Driving Transport, WeRide distinguished itself by winning first place and nearly $1 million in prize money—a testament to the company’s technological excellence and strong commitment to advancing autonomous mobility ecosystems. This victory was personally acknowledged by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, who lauded WeRide’s contributions to shaping the future of Dubai’s mobility landscape.

Further strengthening its foothold in the region, WeRide signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dubai’s RTA. This agreement focuses on collaboration for the development of the Dubai Autonomous Zone—a visionary initiative aimed at transforming the city into a global innovation center for autonomous passenger transport, logistics, and urban mobility. The MoU positions WeRide as a key partner in Dubai’s strategic plans for smart, sustainable urban transport and showcases the company’s long-term dedication to regional growth.

Beyond Dubai, WeRide maintains a strong global presence with autonomous driving operations or testing underway in 11 cities across five countries. Its fully driverless Robotaxi testing in Abu Dhabi is notable as the first such operation outside China and the US, underscoring WeRide’s role as a leader in the autonomous vehicle industry not just in the Middle East but globally. This dual presence in two major UAE metros highlights the company’s strategic focus and operational expertise in varied environments.

WeRide’s success is powered by its proprietary WeRide One platform—a versatile, smart, and cost-effective autonomous driving technology that supports vehicles ranging from Level 2 to Level 4 autonomy. The platform’s adaptability enables WeRide to address diverse transportation needs, from mobility and logistics to sanitation services, demonstrating comprehensive industry applicability.

As the first publicly traded Robotaxi company, WeRide stands out for securing autonomous driving permits in markets spanning China, the UAE, Singapore, France, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, and the US. This regulatory footprint reflects its robust compliance capabilities and readiness to deliver safe, innovative autonomous services worldwide.

With Dubai’s vibrant economy, cutting-edge infrastructure, and proactive regulatory environment, WeRide’s expansion is poised to redefine urban transportation and set new benchmarks for autonomous vehicle deployment in the Middle East. By blending technology leadership with strategic partnerships and regulatory alignment, WeRide is well on its way to making driverless Robotaxi services a reality for tens of thousands of riders by the end of the decade.
