Wegovy® Pill Launches in UAE, Strengthening Global Access to Innovative Obesity Treatment
Bagsværd, Denmark – Novo Nordisk has officially launched the Wegovy® pill (semaglutide tablets) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), marking a significant milestone as the first country outside the United States to offer this medication to individuals living with obesity. This launch is part of Novo Nordisk’s broader initiative to enhance access to innovative obesity treatments globally.
Emil Kongshøj Larsen, Executive Vice President of International Operations at Novo Nordisk, expressed enthusiasm about the launch, stating that it represents a crucial step in expanding access to obesity care worldwide. He noted that future launches will be influenced by local patient demand, healthcare professional readiness, and the robustness of healthcare and telehealth infrastructures capable of supporting long-term obesity management. The UAE has shown promising developments in these areas, and the company anticipates introducing the Wegovy® pill to additional countries in the near future.
Key Features of Wegovy® Pill
The Wegovy® pill is the first oral glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist therapy approved for weight management. Its approval is based on the findings from the OASIS 4 trial program. In this trial, adult participants with obesity or overweight, who adhered to a daily regimen of oral semaglutide 25 mg, experienced an average weight loss of approximately 17%. Notably, one in three participants achieved a weight loss of 20% or more. The weight loss results from the Wegovy® pill are comparable to those achieved with the injectable version of Wegovy® at 2.4 mg.
The safety and tolerability profile of semaglutide was reaffirmed in the OASIS 4 trial, aligning with previous studies on semaglutide for weight management. Furthermore, the Wegovy® pill is the only weight-loss medication approved by both the FDA and the Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) to mitigate the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), such as heart attack and stroke, in adults with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions and obesity or overweight.
Obesity Statistics and Implications
Globally, approximately 1 billion individuals are affected by obesity. In the UAE, 28% of adults are classified as obese, with projections indicating that nearly 7.5 million people will be living with obesity or overweight by 2035. This underscores the urgent need for effective treatment options in the region.
Novo Nordisk has previously announced plans to launch the Wegovy® pill in select markets during the latter half of 2026, further emphasizing its commitment to addressing obesity on a global scale.

Additionally, the Wegovy® injection is indicated for long-term weight management in pediatric patients aged 12 years and older.
Understanding Obesity
Obesity is recognized as a serious, chronic, and complex disease that necessitates long-term management. A common misconception is that obesity stems solely from a lack of willpower; however, biological factors can significantly hinder weight loss efforts. The condition is influenced by a variety of elements, including genetics, social determinants of health, and environmental factors.
