Seven Workers Identified in Tragic Emirates Road Accident

The identification process for the victims of the recent Emirates Road accident has concluded, though it was a lengthy and painful ordeal. The severity of the crash resulted in significant disfigurement of some bodies, complicating the identification efforts for the families involved. Three days after the tragic incident, all seven workers who lost their lives have been formally identified, as confirmed by the Sharjah-based company that employed them.

Emirates Road Accident: The Victims

The deceased included six Indian nationals: Markandey Chauhan, 39, Abdul Rasheed, 38, and Mohammad Saqib, 31, all hailing from Uttar Pradesh, along with Saleem Sayyed, 51, Abdul Rafiq, 37, and Thirupathi Gollapally, 23, from Telangana. The seventh victim, Samuvel Rengasami, 34, was from Sri Lanka’s Northern Province.

A spokesperson from the company provided details regarding the ages of the victims, noting that five of the seven were in their thirties. Thirupathi Gollapally, the youngest, had celebrated his 23rd birthday just last month. Mohammad Saqib was nearing his 32nd birthday. Except for Thirupathi and Mohammad, all the victims were married and had families awaiting their return.

A Voluntary Shift

Adding to the tragedy is the fact that none of the seven workers were obligated to be present at the time of the accident. The company offers optional half-day overtime shifts on weekends based on project needs. Out of a possible 40 workers, only 24 opted to work that Sunday.

Among those who chose to work, 16, including the driver, boarded a minibus to travel from their accommodation in Sharjah to a construction site in Dubai. The accident occurred on their return journey near the Dubai-Sharjah border.

The spokesperson remarked on the commitment and love these workers had for their families. Most of the victims were relatively new to the company, with the exception of Markandey Chauhan, who had been with the firm for over a decade. Many had joined recently, driven by aspirations for a better future.

The victims were seated on the right side of the minibus, which bore the brunt of the impact when the vehicle collided with a stationary truck. Survivors were seated on the opposite side of the bus.

The spokesperson expressed the profound sorrow felt within the organization, stating, “We are all in deep sorrow and shock. Every single soul is valuable to us, and we are mourning the loss of all of them. The way they died has been particularly heartbreaking as some of their bodies were disfigured, which is why the identification process took longer.”

Four Still in Hospital

As of Wednesday night, four of the nine individuals injured in the Emirates Road accident remain hospitalized. Three are in intensive care, with two in critical condition, while the third is reported to be out of danger. The fourth injured individual is stable and recovering in a general ward. The remaining five have been discharged.

Current Developments in the Investigation

This incident marks the third update regarding the Emirates Road accident, which first gained attention on June 8 when Dubai Police confirmed seven fatalities and nine injuries. Authorities issued a road safety warning regarding vehicles stopped in live lanes.

On June 10, Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, Chairman and CEO of Burjeel Holdings, announced a relief package of AED 1 million. This package includes AED 100,000 for each of the seven families affected, as well as AED 180,000 for each of the nine injured individuals requiring medical assistance.

The Indian Consulate, along with the Sri Lankan Consulate in Dubai, is assisting the families in accessing the relief funds provided by Dr. Shamsheer. The company expressed its deep appreciation for this support.

The spokesperson noted the emotional toll on the families who have lost their loved ones, stating, “The families who lost these hardworking members of society have suffered the loss of their loved ones, and their generous response to Dr. Shamsheer’s noble act is moving us.”

Investigations by Dubai Police are ongoing, and no charges have been announced at this time.
