UAE Emirates Road Upgrade Slashes Dubai-Ras Al Khaimah Travel Time by Nearly Half with AED 750m Investment

Date:

Construction is now underway on a transformative project that promises to significantly enhance travel between Dubai and the northern emirates. The Emirates Road expansion, a substantial two-year initiative valued at AED 750 million, aims to slash travel time by nearly half for daily commuters. This upgrade signals a major development in UAE’s road infrastructure, targeting one of its busiest and most crucial corridors.

The UAE government has launched a major expansion of Emirates Road (E 611), a vital federal highway stretching from Dubai through Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, and Ras Al Khaimah. Announced in July 2025 with construction commencing in September, this project represents one of the largest infrastructure investments currently underway in the country. The plan encompasses widening the road, upgrading interchanges, and adding new lanes and collector roads—all designed to reduce congestion and enhance transport efficiency across this busy route.

Emirates Road serves as a significant artery bypassing central Dubai, facilitating faster movement for commuters and freight between the northern and southern emirates. Originally opened in 2006 and renamed in 2013 to reflect its national priority, this highway supports increasing traffic volumes spurred by population growth and economic development. The expansion project responds to these rising demands by modernizing and increasing the capacity of this essential roadway.

Spanning 25 kilometers between Al Badee Interchange in Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain, the upgrade involves widening the existing road from three to five lanes in each direction. This expansion will boost road capacity by 65%, enabling the highway to handle up to 9,000 vehicles per hour. A key feature is the construction of six new directional bridges at Interchange No. 7, totaling 12.6 kilometers in length and capable of supporting 13,200 vehicles per hour. Additionally, 3.4 kilometers of collector roads will be added on both sides to further improve traffic flow, along with 70 kilometers of new traffic lanes as part of broader infrastructure improvements.

The project design adheres to international best practices, focusing on traffic safety, road efficiency, and long-lasting infrastructure resilience. The upgrade officially began in September 2025 and is slated for completion within two years. It is overseen by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) in collaboration with regional authorities, emphasizing benefits not only for individual commuters but also for the UAE’s overall transportation network.

Once complete, the enhanced Emirates Road corridor is expected to reduce travel times by up to 45% for drivers commuting between Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah through Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain. This will notably ease traffic congestion in both directions, offering significant relief to daily commuters and commercial transport operators. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, has highlighted the project’s alignment with national goals to develop a sustainable, efficient, and integrated transport system that supports economic growth and enhances residents’ quality of life. He also noted the environmental benefits of reducing traffic emissions through improved road flows.

Emirates Road holds national importance as a major bypass route developed initially in 2006 to alleviate pressure on Dubai’s urban roads. It was constructed in phases, linking key areas such as Al Dhaid Road in Sharjah down toward the outskirts of Abu Dhabi. Covering approximately 110 kilometers, the road connects vital emirates from Ras Al Khaimah in the north through to Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the south. Unlike the more central Sheikh Zayed or Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Roads, Emirates Road provides a strategic alternative by circumventing municipality centers, helping to divert long-distance traffic away from congested urban cores.

The route is heavily used by daily commuters, freight haulers, and logistics providers, facilitating efficient travel and transport between northern and southern emirates. It also improves access to key industrial and commercial zones, thereby supporting faster freight movement and stronger economic linkages. The current upgrade builds on prior enhancements to ensure that Emirates Road remains capable of accommodating future demand and aligning with the UAE’s comprehensive vision for national infrastructure development.
