A six-year-old girl from China has made headlines by setting a new women’s world record for solving a 3×3 Rubik’s Cube in just over four seconds, as reported by state media. Lian Yunzhi achieved this remarkable feat at two World Cube Association certified competitions held in Wuhan and Guangzhou, where she recorded average times of 4.52 and 4.27 seconds, respectively, after completing five solves.
Lian, hailing from Chengdu, is noted as the first female speedcuber to average under 4.5 seconds, according to the China Central Television (CCTV). A video shared by CCTV captures her in action, showcasing her skill as she swiftly manipulates the cube, celebrating her success with a clap and a triumphant fist pump.
Known affectionately as “Zhizhi,” Lian was introduced to the Rubik’s Cube through a class designed to enhance her extracurricular activities, which also included dance and music. Her mother, Lin Yangxi, explained to local media that she gradually recognised the benefits of cubing as an excellent way to develop her daughter’s cognitive abilities, prompting a shift in focus towards this activity.
Lin revealed that Lian has mastered over 1,300 algorithms for solving the Rubik’s Cube and practices for two to three hours each day. Photos from local news outlets show a collection of trophies that Lian has earned, reflecting her dedication and success in the sport.
According to Lin, solving the Rubik’s Cube not only enhances focus and memory but also fosters logical thinking and spatial awareness. She emphasised that the activity encourages a healthy mindset regarding both winning and losing, highlighting the importance of logical reasoning over mere memorisation of formulas.
