Shinjuku Station, the world’s busiest railway station located in Tokyo, is currently testing mobile robotic rubbish bins to assist sanitation workers, according to a representative from East Japan Railway (JR East). This initiative aims to determine if these automated bins can effectively reduce the workload of staff in a station that serves over 2.7 million passengers daily and holds the Guinness World Record for the busiest rail station globally.
The trial involves three robotic bins, each measuring just over one metre tall and moving at a speed of 20 centimetres per second. These bins are being tested in a section of the station operated by JR East, where manual emptying occurs more than ten times a day. The number of wastebaskets has been reduced in recent years for cleanliness and security reasons.
Shinya Kawamichi, a research official at JR East, expressed the company’s interest in assessing the operational efficiency and safety of these robots in the bustling environment of Shinjuku Station. The trial, which runs until late November, will evaluate how well the bins can navigate the crowded underground concourse and whether commuters are inclined to use them for disposing of their trash.
The robots are designed to operate slowly, allowing passengers to deposit waste easily and stop at any moment if needed. This feature is intended to facilitate interaction with commuters while ensuring safety in the busy station environment. The company is also exploring the potential for expanding the use of this technology in the future.
Initial reactions to the robotic bins have been positive, with many tourists finding the devices appealing. Some have stopped to take photos, drawn in by their quirky, googly-eyed designs. German train driver Chris Genseliein noted the bins’ cuteness and remarked on the difficulty of finding waste disposal options in Japanese train stations.
Despite the extensive layout of Shinjuku Station, which includes two above-ground floors and a large underground area, there are only seven sets of bins and recycling boxes available. While some Japanese passengers maintain that the cleanliness of stations is largely due to individuals taking their trash home, others appreciate the convenience offered by the new robotic bins. University student Ryunosuke Noguchi highlighted the ease of being able to dispose of waste while on the move.
The outcome of this trial could influence future sanitation practices in busy transport hubs, potentially leading to wider adoption of robotic assistance in waste management.
