Russian Air Strikes Kill 10 and Injure Over 50 in Kyiv Attack
Russian forces launched a significant assault on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 individuals and injuries to over 50 others. The attack involved drones and missiles targeting residential areas, which Russia claims was a response to recent Ukrainian strikes on its civil infrastructure.
Attack Details and Immediate Aftermath
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously issued warnings about a potential overnight assault, prompting him to cut short his visit to Dublin, where he was attending the commencement of Ireland’s six-month presidency of the European Union.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported via Telegram that the assault resulted in the destruction of six floors of an apartment building, which partially collapsed following a direct hit from a Russian projectile. Emergency services were seen working through the debris of a nine-storey building as dawn broke over the city, with fires raging in various locations.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of the capital’s military administration, confirmed that 56 people had been injured and that damage was reported at approximately three dozen sites across Kyiv. He stated, “The enemy has once again deliberately targeted residential neighbourhoods and killed civilians. We have sustained extensive damage and a significant number of casualties, including children.”
In his earlier communications, Klitschko noted that among the injured were paramedics and ambulance drivers, and some individuals remained trapped in the wreckage of damaged buildings.
Widespread Panic and Evacuations
Multiple explosions were reported throughout Kyiv, leading residents to seek refuge in underground stations with children, pets, and personal belongings as air raid alerts were issued across much of Ukraine. This marked one of the most severe attacks on the country since mid-June.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, during a visit to Japan, emphasized the urgent need for enhanced air defense systems, stating, “Do not delay decisions on air defence for Ukraine! This is our main request to our partners after Kyiv suffered a night of horror.”
In response to the escalating situation, neighboring Poland briefly scrambled fighter jets as a precautionary measure, later retracting the action after confirming no airspace violations. Finland also established a temporary aviation restriction zone in the eastern Gulf of Finland, which was lifted shortly thereafter.
Context of the Conflict and Retaliation Claims
The Russian Defence Ministry characterized the assault as a “massive attack” utilizing long-range, high-precision air, land, and sea-launched weapons, along with drones targeting military and energy facilities, including airports in Kyiv. The ministry claimed this operation was a retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian civil infrastructure, although specific details were not provided.
According to the ministry, Russian forces downed 327 drones overnight, a figure that includes those intercepted over Russian-occupied territories in Ukraine.
President Zelenskyy has previously suggested negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin to resolve the ongoing conflict, which has persisted for over four years. However, these overtures have been dismissed by the Kremlin.
In recent weeks, Ukraine has intensified its military operations deeper into Russian territory, contributing to a significant fuel crisis in Russia, the world’s third-largest oil producer. Reports indicate that Russia is now importing gasoline from countries as distant as India to address the crisis.
Andrey Travnikov, the governor of the remote Novosibirsk region, reported that the fuel crisis is worsening, with emergency services receiving priority for refueling.
Casualties Beyond Ukraine
In a separate incident, a drone attack in the Nizhny Novgorod region of Russia resulted in one death and four injuries, along with damage to an industrial facility. This region is home to the NORSI oil refinery, one of Russia’s largest.
Governor Alexander Drozdenko of the Leningrad region, where significant oil refining and export facilities are located, stated that Russian forces had intercepted seven drones on Thursday. In the Belgorod region, bordering Ukraine, local authorities reported that a man was killed and his wife injured when a drone struck their home.
Both Russia and Ukraine maintain that they do not intentionally target civilians, although the ongoing conflict has resulted in significant civilian casualties on both sides.
