Qatar Chamber emphasizes sustainability as key to a diversified economy

Published:

The Qatar Chamber has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability as a fundamental element for fostering a diversified and efficient economy. This assertion was made by Acting General Manager Ali Bu Sherbak Al Mansori during a seminar held as part of Qatar Sustainability Week, emphasizing the need to balance economic growth with environmental preservation and the rights of future generations in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.

During the seminar, Al Mansori highlighted the importance of sustainability not only for economic returns but also for community development and environmental stewardship. He stated that the private sector plays a crucial role in achieving sustainability goals by adopting responsible practices, optimizing resource use, and investing in human capital. “The private sector is a key partner in achieving sustainability,” he noted.

Commitment to Social Responsibility

The Qatar Chamber is actively promoting a culture of social responsibility through various initiatives, including conferences, seminars, and training programs aimed at raising awareness of international sustainability standards. Al Mansori encouraged companies to integrate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into their operational strategies.

Representatives from various organizations also contributed to the seminar. Abdulrahman Tareq Abdulrahman from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) discussed the ministry’s ongoing efforts to embed sustainability into daily life and educate citizens on the responsible use of natural resources. He emphasized the importance of reducing consumption and pollution.

Academic Perspectives on Sustainability

Dr. Ahmed Khalifa from Qatar University presented insights on economic and technological solutions for reducing carbon emissions, outlining five core pillars that the university is implementing to advance sustainability. These include monitoring air pollution, enhancing resource efficiency, and fostering innovation within the business community.

Dr. Ali Al Ibrahim, representing the Regional Network for Social Responsibility, discussed the organization’s role in promoting corporate social responsibility across various sectors. He highlighted initiatives aimed at advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030, which focus on fostering sustainable practices globally.

Dr. Jalal Qannas, also from Qatar University, presented a paper on the economic value of sustainability in Qatar, arguing that sustainability extends beyond environmental concerns to encompass broader economic and social dimensions. He emphasized the need for an inclusive approach to sustainability that supports long-term growth across multiple sectors.

The discussions at the seminar reflect a growing recognition among Qatari institutions of the critical role sustainability plays in shaping a resilient economy. As Qatar continues to pursue its National Vision 2030, the integration of sustainable practices into business operations will be essential for achieving both economic and environmental objectives.
