Pittsburgh Mills Bids Adieu to Its Last National Retailer as Bath & Body Works Departures

The End of an Era at Pittsburgh Mills: Bath and Body Works Closes Its Doors

As the weekend approaches, a chapter will close at the Pittsburgh Mills shopping center with the farewell of its last national retailer—Bath and Body Works. This marks a significant moment for the mall, which has watched its retail landscape change drastically over the past year.

A Surging Vacancy Rate

Employees confirmed that Bath and Body Works’ last day of operation will be Saturday. This closure is indicative of the mall’s ongoing struggles, as it faces a staggering 75% vacancy rate. The township’s tally from October 2024 highlighted the mass exodus of retailers, leaving consumers with limited shopping options in the once-thriving space. What was once a bustling hub of activity has turned into a shadow of its former self, with rows of empty storefronts now commonplace.

The Departure of Major Retailers

The trend of closures began accelerating in September 2024 when Panera Bread announced its departure. Having been a staple since the mall’s opening, its exit was a blow to the community. Panera’s new location will be in the former Steak ’n Shake building at the Village at Pittsburgh Mills, making it just a short drive away. This departure was particularly notable as it was one of the few remaining dining options available for shoppers.

Following Panera’s exit, Macy’s faced a similar fate—putting its Pittsburgh Mills location on the market in April 2025. With Dick’s Sporting Goods formerly serving as the mall’s anchor tenant, its closure in June further diminished the center’s retail footprint, with the store relocating to The Waterworks shopping center just nine miles away.

A Rollercoaster of Closures

Bath and Body Works and Jo-Ann Fabrics were all that remained of the national chains, but Jo-Ann’s closure—following a bankruptcy declaration—left Bath and Body Works standing alone as the last bastion of national retail for shoppers. The loss of these stores highlights not just the decline of Pittsburgh Mills, but a broader trend affecting many malls in the United States, echoing the struggles of physical retail spaces amidst a booming online shopping culture.

Infrastructure Improvements Amid Retail Decline

Interestingly, while the mall’s retail presence continues to dwindle, there are positive strides being made regarding infrastructure. Since late August, workers have been busy filling potholes throughout the Mills complex, including key areas at the Mills Drive entrance and near the old Dick’s storefront. Even as shops disappear, efforts to maintain the physical space show a commitment to the property’s upkeep.

According to Frazer building inspector Bill Payne, a more extensive paving project is on the horizon, scheduled for November 3-6. This will involve replacing old pavement along Village Center Drive and in front of Lowe’s. Such initiatives may lend a glimmer of hope that the property will receive continued investment and attention, even amidst the challenges faced by its tenants.

The Community’s Reaction

For many locals, the loss of Bath and Body Works is more than just a retail closure; it’s a reflection of changing shopping habits and the economic landscape. Those who grew up visiting the mall now find themselves grappling with a greatly reduced selection of stores and amenities. The sense of nostalgia tied to shopping centers often cherished during childhood makes these transitions all the more poignant for the community.

Looking Ahead

As the mall prepares to bid farewell to Bath and Body Works, the future of Pittsburgh Mills remains uncertain. Will it evolve into a different kind of space, or will it face further declines? The challenges are real, yet the ongoing infrastructural improvements indicate that while retail may be changing, the property is still regarded as a valuable asset deserving of investment and care. For now, shoppers and employees alike will gather one last time to celebrate the memories associated with Bath and Body Works, even as the mall’s landscape shifts drastically around them.
