New Dubai Roads: RTA Unveils Three Major Upgrades Set to Transform Commuting in June 2026
Residents near Dubai Harbour can expect significant changes to their driving experience starting June 2026. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the opening of several key road projects aimed at improving traffic flow for commuters traveling to Abu Dhabi via Hessa Street and those navigating routes near Motor City and Arabian Ranches. These upgrades are set to enhance daily commutes, making them more efficient and less time-consuming.
The Bridge That Changes Everything
The RTA has announced the completion of 90 percent of a 1,500-meter bridge that will provide direct access between Sheikh Zayed Road and Dubai Harbour. Developed in partnership with Shamal Holding, a Dubai-based private investment firm, this two-lane bridge is one of the most significant infrastructure projects in Dubai this year.
The bridge will commence at Interchange 5 on Sheikh Zayed Road, adjacent to the American University of Dubai. It will traverse Al Naseem Street and Al Falak Street, cross over King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street, and ultimately connect to Dubai Harbour Street.
One of the most notable benefits of this bridge is the reduction in travel time. The crossing between Sheikh Zayed Road and Dubai Harbour will be shortened from 12 minutes to just 3 minutes. Once operational, the bridge will accommodate up to 6,000 vehicles per hour in each direction. Currently, 12 teams comprising 1,400 engineers and workers are on-site, with over 4.2 million work hours logged since the project’s inception.
The bridge will open in two phases. Phase 1 is scheduled for June, allowing vehicles from Sheikh Zayed Road, coming from both Deira and Jebel Ali, to access Dubai Harbour directly. Phase 2 is anticipated to follow in July, facilitating traffic from Dubai Harbour to Al Naseem Street and providing access from the new bridge to the intersection of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street and Al Naseem Street.
For residents of Dubai Harbour and the adjacent waterfront area, which lies between Bluewaters Island and Palm Jumeirah, this development addresses long-standing traffic challenges that have persisted due to an underdeveloped road network.
Sheikh Zayed Road Gets More Room
In addition to the bridge, the RTA is set to introduce a new traffic lane on Sheikh Zayed Road, aimed at easing congestion for motorists traveling from Hessa Street towards Abu Dhabi. This new lane is expected to open on June 22 and is particularly significant for one of the city’s busiest evening intersections.
This upgrade is a continuation of previous enhancements made to Hessa Street, which underwent a complete overhaul in April 2026. The RTA expanded the road’s capacity from 8,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour and reduced travel time from 15 minutes to just 4 minutes. The new lane on Sheikh Zayed Road will further alleviate congestion along the Abu Dhabi route, addressing a bottleneck that the Hessa Street improvements alone could not resolve.
New Dubai Roads: Two New Links for South Dubai
The final week of June will see the opening of two additional roads that will serve residential communities in southern and western Dubai. On June 28, the RTA will unveil a new connecting road between Emirates Road and Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street. This link will enhance access for residents of Villanova and Arabian Ranches III, who currently face longer detours to reach Emirates Road.
On the same day, a second road will connect Al Qudra Road and Hessa Street, bridging the gap between Dubai Studio City and Motor City. This corridor will serve a densely populated area of residential and creative industry communities that have limited east-west road access. By linking Al Qudra Road to Hessa Street, this new route will simplify commutes for residents who have long navigated around this gap.
These projects, while not as monumental as some of Dubai’s other infrastructure initiatives, are crucial in addressing everyday commuting challenges. The RTA’s broader strategy aims to develop an integrated road network that supports growth across key areas.
