Kalimat Group Expands Global Reach of Arabic Children’s Literature with Over 1,000 Titles
Since its inception in Sharjah in 2007, Kalimat Group has established a significant international presence in the realm of Arabic children’s literature. The organization has successfully introduced its titles to global publishing markets, making them accessible to new audiences in various languages.
Extensive Publishing and Distribution Network
Kalimat Group has published over 1,000 titles and developed a robust distribution network that includes more than 130 partners worldwide. This extensive reach has enabled Arabic storytelling to transcend regional boundaries, connecting with readers across the globe.
The group’s international profile has been bolstered through participation in prominent industry events, including the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. At this prestigious event, Kalimat Publishing House was honored as the Best Children’s Publisher in Asia. Additionally, the group received the BolognaRagazzi Award in the fiction category for “House of Wisdom,” authored by Her Highness Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, the Founder and CEO of Kalimat Group.
Growing Demand for Diverse Narratives
The recognition of Kalimat Group highlights the increasing competitiveness of Arabic children’s content in the global publishing landscape. As the demand for culturally diverse narratives rises, the group is well-positioned to meet this need.
The expansion of Arabic children’s literature coincides with sustained growth in the global children’s publishing sector. Industry data indicates that the market was valued at approximately $13.1 billion in 2024 and is projected to exceed $27.4 billion by 2033. This growth reflects a rising demand for literary content aimed at younger readers.
Each year, over 2.3 billion children’s books are published across more than 95 countries, emphasizing the scale of the sector. As publishers seek stories that encompass a broader range of cultures and experiences, Arabic children’s literature is increasingly reaching new audiences. This shift is driving greater investment in the development, translation, and international distribution of Arabic titles.
Commitment to Quality and Cultural Representation
Ahmed Al Ali, General Manager at Kalimat Group, emphasized the importance of children’s literature as a long-term investment in society. He stated that early reading fosters imagination, language skills, and a deeper understanding of oneself and the world. According to Al Ali, a book in a child’s hands does more than tell a story; it shapes their knowledge, broadens their horizons, and instills a lifelong reading habit.
He further noted the group’s commitment to developing content that adheres to strong intellectual and artistic standards. This commitment reflects the cultural environment while remaining open to shared values. Al Ali remarked that Arabic children’s literature possesses narrative and human potential that can enrich the global literary landscape, serving not only as cultural representation but also through authentic experiences that promote intellectual exchange across languages and geographies.
Expanding Catalog and Cultural Initiatives
In response to the growing demand, Kalimat Group has expanded its catalog for children and young adults, increasing the availability of translations into international languages. The current list exceeds 1,000 titles, with numerous works accessible beyond the Arab world, thereby widening access to Arabic literature.
In addition to its publishing efforts, the group has initiated cultural and educational programs to promote reading. One such initiative, “A World of Stories,” has established 120 libraries in children’s wards and play areas across hospitals and medical centers in the UAE, integrating reading into recovery and emotional support.
The impact of these stories is immediate for younger readers encountering them for the first time. The books they read help shape their worldview, and each Arabic title that travels contributes a new voice to that narrative.
Participation in Cultural Dialogues
Earlier this year, Kalimat Group concluded its participation in the second edition of the Sharjah Festival of African Literature. This event highlighted Africa’s literary voices and narratives, reaffirming Sharjah’s role as a hub for cross-cultural dialogue. Organized by the Sharjah Book Authority at the University City of Sharjah from January 14 to 18 under the theme “The African Way,” the festival brought together writers, publishers, and readers from across Africa and the Arab world.
As part of its involvement, Kalimat Group organized a dedicated pavilion featuring its imprints, Kalimat and Rewayat. This pavilion showcased a curated selection of publications that explore Africa through storytelling, history, imagination, and the human experience.
The group also contributed to the festival’s cultural program with a series of discussion sessions that featured writers from the UAE and Africa, including Zimbabwean author Tsitsi Dangarembga, a recipient of the Sharjah Lifetime Achievement in Literature Award, and Emirati author Amal Alsahlawi, who read her poetry at the festival’s opening.
