ITC Strengthens Oversight with Inauguration of Central Control Room for Autonomous Vehicle Operations in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi – The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), part of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has officially inaugurated a central control room aimed at overseeing and monitoring autonomous vehicle (AV) operations throughout Abu Dhabi. The event was attended by Sheikh Hamdan bin Saeed bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Director of the Special Projects Department at the Private Office, along with His Excellency Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of the Department of Municipalities and Transport.
Enhancing Regulatory Oversight
This initiative is designed to bolster direct supervision and effective regulation of the autonomous vehicle sector. It employs advanced systems for real-time monitoring, data analysis, and decision support, thereby ensuring optimal safety and operational efficiency. The establishment of the control room coincides with the ongoing expansion of autonomous vehicle services in the emirate, underscoring the necessity for regulatory frameworks that can adapt to the rapid growth of this industry.
The ITC has specified that the control room will operate during approved hours, ensuring that all monitoring and response activities are in line with designated schedules and regulatory requirements. This setup allows for immediate oversight of autonomous vehicle movements and enables swift responses to operational or emergency situations, thereby enhancing road safety.
Advanced Monitoring Systems
Equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring and operational systems, the control room features a centralized supervision system. It also includes an integrated platform for the operational and testing management of Autonomous Vehicles (AViTOMS). This platform facilitates real-time tracking of vehicle locations, speeds, and routes, comprehensive trip recording and analysis, coordinated emergency response management with relevant authorities, and the generation of periodic data-driven reports aimed at enhancing routing and optimizing operational efficiency. Additionally, the platform oversees the processes for issuing permits and approving operational routes.
Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director General of the Integrated Transport Centre, remarked that the inauguration of the central control room marks a significant milestone in the development of the regulatory framework for autonomous vehicles in Abu Dhabi. He emphasized that this initiative responds to the swift adoption of smart mobility technologies, necessitating an advanced supervisory system for real-time monitoring and effective risk management. The control room aims to create an integrated approach that combines technical capabilities with regulatory frameworks, thereby enhancing the emirate’s preparedness for operating autonomous vehicles in a safe and organized manner.
Commitment to Smart Mobility
H.E. Hamad Adel Al Afeefi, Executive Director of the Intelligent Transportation Systems Sector, highlighted that the Centre’s initiatives signify a considerable shift toward an integrated digital services model. This model is intended to reinforce Abu Dhabi’s leadership in the smart transportation sector.
The control room will oversee all autonomous vehicle services operated by licensed providers within the emirate. This initiative strengthens regulatory oversight, supports the rapid growth of the sector, and fosters an environment conducive to the adoption of smart mobility solutions that adhere to the highest standards of safety and efficiency.
