ECOWAS National Offices Convene in Freetown to Strengthen Collaboration and Address Regional Integration Challenges
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has convened a three-day meeting of Heads of ECOWAS National Offices from July 8 to 10, 2026, in Freetown, Sierra Leone. This gathering focuses on the theme: “The Role of the ECOWAS National Offices in the Future of ECOWAS: Challenges, Opportunities and Strengthening Collaboration among ECOWAS National Offices to Advance Regional Integration Programmes.”
Purpose of the Annual Meeting
The Annual Meeting, established by the Council’s Decision C/Dec.6/12/90, serves as a crucial platform for exchanging experiences and sharing best practices among member states. Participants are set to review the progress made in implementing community programmes at the national level, identify emerging challenges and opportunities, and explore practical approaches to enhance the effectiveness and visibility of ECOWAS interventions. This meeting also aims to discuss the evolving role of the Heads of ECOWAS National Offices within the new ECOWAS architecture, aligning with commitments to future regional integration.
Opening Remarks and Encouragement for Collaboration
In his opening remarks, Mr. Jerome BOA, Director of External Relations at the ECOWAS Commission, praised the Commission’s management for recognizing the vital role of ECOWAS National Offices in facilitating the implementation of community programmes and projects at the national level.
Madam Kenyeh Laura BARLAY, the Minister of Planning and Economic Development of Sierra Leone, represented by Mr. Kamba MOMO, Head of the ECOWAS National Office in Sierra Leone, urged the Heads of ECOWAS National Offices to engage in constructive discussions. She emphasized the importance of sharing experiences and developing recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of National Offices and the implementation of ECOWAS programmes across member states. Her statements highlighted a collective commitment to strengthening regional integration and improving coordination for the benefit of West Africa’s populace.
Keynote Address on Regional Integration
H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu TOURAY, President of the ECOWAS Commission, represented by Amb. Dr. Abdel-Fatau MUSAH, the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, underscored the critical role of ECOWAS National Offices as essential drivers of regional integration. He noted their function as bridges between the Commission and member states, commending their contributions to enhancing coordination and promoting visibility for ECOWAS programmes.
President TOURAY remarked that the meeting is timely, given the evolving regional dynamics and institutional reforms within ECOWAS. He encouraged participants to leverage this platform for experience exchange, joint initiatives, and to define the future role of National Offices in line with the objectives of ECOWAS Vision 2050 and the Compact for the Future of Regional Integration.
