Dubai Police Maritime Operations Centre Strengthens Coastal Security with AI Amid Regional Tensions

The Dubai Police Maritime Operations Centre has taken significant steps to enhance the security of the emirate’s coastline in response to escalating regional tensions following the recent US-Iran conflict. Utilizing advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, smart surveillance systems, and real-time monitoring, the centre has effectively coordinated emergency responses and bolstered maritime security, ensuring seamless operations across Dubai’s waters.

Lieutenant General Abdulla Khalifa Al Marri, Commander in Chief of Dubai Police, recently visited the Ports Police Station, which oversees 13 operational areas, including six marine zones and seven coastal sectors. This visit underscores the importance of the station in maintaining security along Dubai’s extensive coastline.

Brigadier Dr. Hassan Suhail Al Suwaidi, Director of Dubai Police Ports Station, emphasized that the AI-driven operations centre serves as a central command hub, facilitating coordination among various government agencies and private sector partners. This collaborative approach enhances the overall effectiveness of maritime security efforts.

AI-Powered Command Centre Coordinates Maritime Security

The Maritime Operations Centre has unified the efforts of Dubai Police, the National Guard, DP World, immigration authorities, maritime regulators, and security agencies. Brigadier Al Suwaidi noted the importance of teamwork among these entities, stating, “We worked as one team alongside the relevant authorities, the National Guard, DP World, immigration officials, and other partners.”

The operations room is responsible for receiving and coordinating all maritime-related reports, including emergencies and security incidents. This structure allows for rapid responses while ensuring that maritime activities remain uninterrupted. The centre employs cutting-edge technology, including AI, radar systems, and advanced marine scanning tools, to monitor Dubai’s territorial waters in real-time. This technology aids officers in detecting, locating, and recovering suspicious objects, thereby enhancing maritime security.

Private maritime operators have also played a crucial role by sharing information from vessels and coastal facilities, which expands the surveillance network and improves situational awareness.

Divers Deployed to Recover Suspicious Objects

In response to reports of unidentified debris and suspicious objects in the sea, specialist diving teams were mobilized. Brigadier Al Suwaidi confirmed that divers successfully recovered materials believed to be linked to drones and other aerial objects, which were subsequently examined as part of broader maritime security operations. This specialized response ensured that potentially hazardous materials were removed without disrupting maritime traffic or public safety.

Round-the-Clock Patrols Ensure Rapid Response

Dubai Police maintains a constant security presence across its coastline through an extensive network of patrol units operating 24/7. The maritime emergency response system includes:

  • 12 sea patrols
  • Seven land patrols
  • Two beach buggy patrols
  • Two foot patrol units

These teams operate on rotating shifts and are prepared to respond to vessel breakdowns, marine accidents, criminal incidents, and emergency distress calls throughout Dubai’s coastal waters. Brigadier Al Suwaidi highlighted the introduction of clear performance indicators to measure response times for maritime emergencies, stating, “In many parts of the world, maritime response times are difficult to measure because conditions vary. We have set clear targets for ourselves and continue to achieve them.”

Rescue Operations Continue to Save Lives

Despite the reliance on advanced technology, rescue missions remain a core focus of Dubai Police’s operations. Major Saeed Khalifa Al Mazrouei, Head of the General Shift Section, reported several successful rescue operations this year, including a recent incident where tourists were safely rescued after their boat experienced engine failure at sea. Police teams regularly assist stranded boat owners, jet ski riders, and other recreational users affected by mechanical failures or adverse weather conditions.

Beach Safety Campaigns Expanded

Dubai Police has enhanced beach safety initiatives by collaborating closely with tourism and environmental authorities. Dedicated teams patrol beaches, assist visitors, conduct public awareness campaigns, and ensure compliance with swimming regulations and other safety measures. During New Year’s Eve celebrations, officers successfully reunited seven children who had become separated from their families, including a child with special needs.

Brigadier Al Suwaidi emphasized the importance of parental supervision during large public events to ensure safety.

Drone Technology to Expand Future Operations

Looking ahead, Dubai Police plans to further integrate drone technology into its maritime security strategy. Drone-box systems have already been installed at selected beaches and island locations to facilitate faster aerial surveillance, environmental monitoring, and emergency assessments. Officials believe that drones will significantly enhance response capabilities while expanding coverage across Dubai’s coastline.

Maritime Safety by the Numbers

Dubai Ports Police reported substantial operational activity over the past year, reflecting the scale of its maritime enforcement efforts. Authorities handled 2,644 reports through the Maritime Operations Room, recorded 143 marine accidents, and detected 1,313 marine violations. Among these violations were 658 jet ski infractions, 636 boat and marine vessel violations, and 19 commercial ship violations.

Inspection teams evaluated 26 jet ski rental companies, with 24 found in violation. Authorities seized 63 jet skis for technical inspections, of which 52 failed to meet safety requirements, resulting in 75 enforcement actions. Common penalties include fines of Dh1,000 for operating a jet ski with an expired license or failing to wear safety equipment, while dangerous behavior that endangers others can incur fines of Dh2,000.

Dubai Police reported a 100% public safety perception and confidence in walking safely at night across the 13 coastal zones under its jurisdiction, demonstrating the force’s ongoing commitment to protecting lives and ensuring maritime security.
