Major Gold Seizure at Amritsar Airport

Seizure Highlights

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has made a significant discovery at the Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar, recovering gold worth approximately ₹94 lakh from two passengers arriving from Dubai. This high-profile case underscores the ongoing challenges of gold smuggling at Indian airports.

Concealment Techniques

According to DRI officials, both passengers had cleverly concealed gold ornaments within the pockets of their cargo pants. The recovered items included an array of gold jewellery: chains, bangles, and rings. These items were seized in accordance with the Customs Act, which governs the regulations regarding the import of goods into the country.

Operations Based on Intelligence

The DRI’s successful operation stemmed from specific intelligence indicating that certain passengers arriving from Dubai were attempting to illegally import gold into India. Acting on this tip-off, the officers conducted a thorough search at the airport and identified the two passengers, who exhibited suspicious behavior during their transit.

Details of the Seizure

Upon closer inspection, DRI officials uncovered the hidden gold ornaments in the trousers of the arrested individuals. The total weight of the seized gold was 430.44 grams from one passenger and 396.44 grams from the other. This substantial haul, valued at around ₹94 lakh in the current market, reveals the high stakes involved in gold smuggling operations.

Detention and Ongoing Investigations

Following the seizure, both passengers were detained for further questioning. Investigators aim to ascertain whether the individuals are linked to a broader smuggling network. This inquiry is part of the DRI’s ongoing effort to combat illegal gold trafficking through international airport channels, which has been a prevalent issue.

Continued Vigilance Against Gold Smuggling

The DRI Amritsar Zonal Unit has reiterated its commitment to tackling gold smuggling activities. This incident is just one of many where authorities remain on high alert, aiming to safeguard local markets and enforce customs regulations effectively.

The airport authorities and customs officials emphasize the importance of vigilance and proactive operations to deter smuggling activities that undermine legal trade and import practices in India. With ongoing efforts, the DRI aims to significantly restrict the flow of illegally imported gold, thus protecting the economy and the legitimate gold trading sector.

This recent seizure serves as a reminder of the complexities and risks involved in smuggling operations, and reinforces the need for robust monitoring at international gateways.
