Dubai-it: Two Women, Two Worlds Unite After 18 Years to Transform Lives in Malawi

In March 2026, a chance encounter on the streets of Malawi reunited two women whose lives had taken dramatically different paths since they first met nearly two decades earlier. Sarah Brook, a British national who volunteered in Malawi at age 18, transformed her experience into a nonprofit organization that supports thousands of vulnerable children. Violet Matimati, Brook’s first friend in Malawi, has faced significant challenges, including teenage pregnancy and divorce, yet has emerged resilient and empowered.

Brook’s journey began when she volunteered at an orphanage during her gap year. She described her decision to go to Malawi as a stroke of luck, stating, “At 18, I literally pointed at a map, and my finger landed on Malawi.” During her time there, she met Matimati, who was a teenager at the time, and introduced Brook to the harsh realities of life in Malawi. Matimati, who was caring for a baby, shared her experiences of hardship and resilience, which deeply impacted Brook.

The two women quickly formed a bond, united by their shared passion for helping others and a love for netball. Their friendship flourished, but life took a turn when Brook faced a medical emergency involving a twisted bowel, known as a volvulus. The local healthcare system was ill-equipped to handle her condition, and she was at risk of not making it to a private hospital two hours away. Fortunately, she received the necessary surgery and spent nearly a month recovering. This experience profoundly affected her, leading her to commit to changing as many lives as possible.

In 2015, Brook founded The Sparkle Foundation, a community organization dedicated to providing education, nutrition, and medical support to orphans and vulnerable children in Malawi. She emphasized that her work has reshaped her identity, teaching her the importance of resilience and community. “Real change isn’t measured by numbers, but by knowing that because of our work, even one child’s life has a better future,” she stated.

During the establishment of her foundation, Brook relied on Matimati’s support. They lived together for several months, sharing daily life and laughter. Matimati and her then-husband even asked Brook to name their newborn child, which she did, naming him Joshua. Initially, Matimati was involved in overseeing the nonprofit, but complications arose due to her ex-husband’s lack of transparency. This led to a rift between the friends, resulting in a gradual loss of contact.

Brook relocated to the UK in 2018 and later moved to Dubai in 2022, where she continued her work between Malawi and the UAE. It took three years to register her foundation in the UAE, but she eventually received a humanitarian visa from the Ministry of Economy. The Sparkle Foundation has since flourished, impacting over 30,000 lives and expanding its reach to over 25,000 students across the UAE.

While Brook was building her foundation, Matimati faced her own struggles, including divorce and financial hardship. During a subsequent visit to Malawi, Brook was taken aback by the changes in Matimati’s circumstances. Matimati’s journey has been one of resilience; she became financially independent by driving a motorbike and engaging in charity work. Today, she works for Villages in Partnership, an international nonprofit addressing critical issues such as food insecurity and inadequate healthcare in Malawi.

The reunion in March 2026 was not just a moment of nostalgia for Brook and Matimati; it was a testament to their enduring friendship and shared commitment to improving lives in Malawi. Reflecting on their past, Brook remarked, “I didn’t know then that the girl with the baby on her back, and the girl who had come to Malawi not quite knowing why, were both going to spend the next two decades trying to change the same corner of the world.”

Brook believes their connection was not coincidental, attributing it to a shared purpose in helping the most vulnerable. She expressed pride in Matimati’s journey, stating that her story exemplifies how determination can redefine one’s future. The two women, despite their different life experiences, remain united in their mission to uplift their communities.
